Jonkershoek - maintenance issues!

Recommended Posts

Being a Stellies local, we pay our yearly subscriptions and ride Jonkershoek at least once a week. What is starting to irk me, is that it seems not much is being done with the monies received by MTO forrestry's to maintain the tracks! MTB is booming out of control and with access to riding spots either closing down or getting very expensive, more and more people( including the trail runners) are now using places like Jonkies, resulting in tracks being way over used! Canaries 1,2 and 3 have got so bad, it is now better to go up them then down!!! I suggest that MTO really start using monies gained frm us MTBers to make Jonkies a MTB paradise that it can be. Many more new tracks are required so as to spread the load. Come on guy's, let's get Jonkies back on track.

I have had the exact issue for some time now... where is the money going? And who builds and maintains the trails? Its even worse in Tokai. I now look at riding in privately owned tracks like Oak Valley and Welvanpas. At least the passion is there and fewer people...

Was also looking forward to riding there during my December holiday break but was very disappointing. Was there two years ago and it was AWESOME!

Tokai is maintained by volunteers and organized by Deon from amarider. There are build days that are posted on the hub. Come and build, we need all the hands we can get!

Jimmy: i think they are saying they are entitled to manicured tracks because they pay. As always, the question then is, what are they paying for? entry only or entry + maintenance.

I disagree, Jonkers is still in quite good shape and a great place to ride. Canary trails are not so bad as to require maintenance right now. But yes it is getting very busy and more work will be required. I think they should up their entrance fee just a bit as I think R25 is cheap for what you get.

All the entry fee money goes to sanparks head office in pretoria, whether its from tokai or kruger park. Then it is spent where it is needed. So I would assume that the big parks need more cash to run than some little bike trails. We are not high up on sanparks agenda.

At least 30 guys go in for free everyday, there is a easy single track around the gate with no fencing or any attempt to stop them! (30 x R 25 x 365 = R250 000+ a year)

Its a business, therefore when they decided to open it for running or riding the entry fee needs to include maintenance! It's so obvious that plenty traffic and the bad winters erode the trails.

That's why I got pissed off with Tokai as the money spent (entry fee) AT TOKAI was not staying in Tokai!

It's not about cyclists volunteering to keep the trails looking good as you then preventing the 'correct people' to do the maintenance.

And I'll look like the bad guy because I'm having a go at all the good volunteers but I'm trying to understand why the money is not spent on the trails I or many others used to or still frequent!

South African mentality!

I see your point David but I want to ride decent trails now, not maybe in a few years time. So I help to build. When others are raving about the trails and they don't know that you helping to build them its even better

No They are in actual fact doing trail maintenance but I can clearly see that you are not a trail builder or know anything about trails.

Trail maintenance are being done in winter when the soil is wet and workable. In summer times when it is as dry as we have been having this winter you damage the trails more when trying to work with them. That is normal and you can see that in all trails, G-Spot, Bluegums and so on.

There are some big things happening with trails in Jonkershoek and things won't be as they were with MTO running the show.

Anyway, ride the trails as they are for now, it will improve your skills. MTB is not about having it all perfect(thats why we have road cycling)! MTB is about adapting to the conditions and that includes weather, trail condition, and other trail users!

Rather say thanks to what we as volunteers do to keep the trails rideable. Your R25 per ride is just for land access, trail building comes out of very kind people who lift up the spade so you can ride cool trails!

That is if you are a Downhill Biker !!! I have offered to help build whenever they arrange the next build day for the XC trails but it never happens...

They have had dozens of build days in Tokai now but only for the downhill trails. I know it sounds negative but it is unreasonable now. Not to mention that there are 100/1 XC riders to downhill bikers at the moment. The Tokai XC trails are in the worst condition ever and are way over-crowded. Why can't the trail management guys organize some sort of donation from all the riders to hire labourers to help maintain all of the trails??

How about donating something a lot more valuable than a few bob? Like some sweat and a blister or two? Karate Monkey will appreciate that a lot more.
