What irritates me most is how badly it is telegraphed, the opposition back 3 can get into position for the counter.

The box kick that Joost and Fourie du Preez executed back in the day came out of nowhere and the winger(including Habana) instincticely knew he should be in position to chase it.

That said, I do love the service Faf gives and his sniping runs, best scrummie in that element of the game for the Boks since Fourie, imho.

Agree with your last sentence.

Could not for the life of me understand why he would still execute box kicks when Aphiwe was sin-binned, though - who was supposed to chase those kicks??  If nobody - what was the point?  That tells me it was part of the structured game plan - but logic dictates that it should have been changed when you no longer have a chaser available on that side of the field.

Very valid point! Please send Rassie a WhatsApp, I think he missed it...

If you can't hype yourself up for an All Black vs Springbok game at home then there is nothing I can say on this forum that will do it.

Go enjoy your 1-1 draws in the Premier League next week 17h00.

PS. I am fed up with Negative Nancy's. It's a game, enjoy it for what it is.

agreed.

I'm more pointing to the fact that this game is now a dead rubber.

The loss in australia was one we really should have won.

If we had pulled that one off, we'd be on 17points, the allbacks on 21.

We would need to win with bonus point for the title...the last time that happened the game was onbelooflik

That would have been more than epic.

Almost Pioneer trekishly awesome.

I do believe the Boks' weakness in the main is the breakdown - both on attack and defense.

On our attack, our tackled player becomes isolated with the opposition getting players to the breakdown and legally contesting for a turn-over, thereby giving away the penalty on attack ("not releasing ball") or slowing down the attack and giving the defense time to regroup. This is criminal. I don't have the stats, but would love to know how many such penalties the Boks have conceded this year?

Conversely, while we're defending, not only is nobody contesting for the turnover (probably coach's instructions not to give away the penalty for coming off feat), but we are unable to slow the game down and the start of another phase of attack. Hence the record number of tackles made by the Boks.

And it all starts at 6,7 & 8. Looking at all the combinations we've had this year, it's clear all players selected in these positions can tackle, carry and break the line (although the latter is a stat best reserved for backline players).

I'm not sure how to translate my sentiments into team selections.

But I do believe our inability to deal with the breakdown will be telling on Saturday at Loftus. I hope I'm proven wrong.

Don't know if you saw this article from  "Oom Rugby"

In short it seems to be a deliberate Bok tactic, less numbers in the breakdown mean they can line up & shoot up in defence quicker. Tactic works if you are dominant in your tackles but yes you are going to make far more tackles.

No, I hadn't read this and makes for an informative read. I can now better understand what the strategy is on defense. I was wondering if it was a conscious decision or a function of ability and team selection.

But it still bothers me that we can't protect our own attacking player at the breakdown, thereby giving away far too many "not releasing the ball" penalties.

I'm always amazed at how bad the reffing is.

The so-called best refs just make so many mistakes, there is surely too much interpretation in the rules and obviously so many infractions go past as the ref sees it in real time and not dissected like here.

BUT, eg. aussie first try.

watch it from here

https://youtu.be/H4wU9Zt9vZk?t=119

Garces goes and chats to his touch judge, and they agree that it's not forward.

[french] "the pass is ok for me"

Now normally it's incredibly hard to see if a pass is forward or not.* In this case however Genia is running sideways, so there is no forward momentum to take into account so any movement forward is a forward pass.

here's the release. there is a section of grass mowing which shows it easy to draw a line as a marker.

and here's the catch, using the same mowing line as the reference. Note how the TJ is right in line, he could not be in a better position.

Now if they went upstairs, the correct call is a forward pass.

We are so used to so many calls being wrong that I haven't even seen anyone mention this glaring error. Now I know you could probably pick out a 100 mistakes the ref made on both sides, but this is a final scoring pass and we have two officials in line, and a guy in the booth and they still get it wrong.

*here is a video explaining what a forward pass is - nothing to do with if the ball actually goes fwd or backward

Visually versus the TMO's rule book, I don't understand the forward pass. Hand position, front of hand, etc.

What I do know, is that a forward pass was one of my biggest ever emotional turn-arounds in sport in one second, eclipsed only by the Klusner Donald run out.

I'm taking about Helgard Muller's forward pass to Jan Harm van Wyk in the 1997 Currie Cup Final between WP and Cheetahs at Newlands. See below at 11.25. What a classic final - some legends of the game in both teams.

6-6 HT

A big improvement from the Bokke, not having to make as many tackles as they have had to in recent times. The Sky commentators could be right that the ABs would be happier, given that they’ve had much less of the ball.

Hoping for a better second half, that results in a favourable result.

Bok jerseys are like Argus medals. Everybody must get one.

I think Rassie made a big mistake bringing subs on when he should not have.. We had it in the bag!

Some players will one day tell the grand kids. I got 89 caps for the Boks. But I only played seven and half minutes for the boks.

Damn. I am seriously upset

Missed the game, but Googled the score. 30-32 to the All Blacks is not bad in my opinion. We beat them once in this competition, on their home turf.

Bokke!!

At 30-13, the Bokke should have put the ABs away. The ABs scored 19 unanswered points in the last 20-25 mins to wrap up the game.

It was a good second half let down in the end by some errant play. If this is a prelude to the RWC next year, then by all means, make the errors now, learn from it and don’t make them next year. The Bokke have proven they can do it, and not once off.

I remember in recent times we were calling out basic errors that pros shouldn’t be making... today was a far cry from those frustrating days, even though the Bokke lost.

Frustrating loss to take. We flippen had them! Subs definitely let us down. But think this loss will do us the world of good actually,if we can learn from it.

Now the Jaguares just needs to step up and ensure the Aussies finish dead last. :)

Agreed. If somehow we manage to win the rwc next year it will be this loss that does it.

We can say it was the subs, but I think even though beauden barrit is the best rugby player in the world, he's not the best flyhalf(reference from squidge rugby on YouTube). I reckon the forced substitution of mo'unga is what actually tipped it for them in the end. They also don't have a long range goalkicker.
