What is a fair price for a race? I'm trying to involve the whole family but it's becoming expensive to enter 4 people regularly. I've just looked at the Heritage Hill race upcomming. R600 for a team of 3?

PS: Credits to Babba's, last time around they gave me an imprompto discount on the spot!

On Sunday it will be my final race. Paying R200 for a race, parking, travelling, energy bars and drinks it adds up to approx R400 per race.

Yes I find it way to expensive.

I wanted to get the family involved in this race too. We were thinking of making up 2 man teams of "father and son" and "Hubby and wife" etc etc and have some friendly family competition.

We were at 5 teams until we heard what the race fees are.

Needless to say, interest diminished. So now, no teams are entering...

I agree it is too expensive, for bulk bookings one should be able to receive a discount (even just a teensy weensy one, it all counts!) on a sliding scale.

Was R200 for berge en dale on Saturday (R400 per tandem) and they didnt even provide goodie bags. Don't remember seeing a waterpoint along the way either, one wonders what the entry fee covers...

I am becoming a bit more discerning about the races that I enter. The Roller Coaster a few weeks ago was only R70, two weeks or so before that was the Cobra which was double the price.

I am finding that the one day cycling races are still offering excellent value. Trail running seems to be getting damn expensive, the Two Oceans Trail run cost me R450,00, for a 22 km race, that's pretty pricey.

Down here we pay less than R100.00 a PPA race, and they are all close together (seldom have to travel more than 100km to a race and back home). The Argus seeding races (non PPA) is way more expensive.

Depending on where you stay meneer........ It's 100Km one way to s/suburbs for me.

R200 for a race entry is a bit steep, I must agree.

Yet many of us spend R600 on a (bike) tire or R 10 K on a set of wheels without any hesitation.

Supply...demand, if you want to ride races be prepared to fork out the moola, value is relative and isn't only calculated ito of what is in the goodie bag. Your money doesn't solely go into the organization of the event. Believe it or not, you pay alot for the hype around the event as well, the bigger the hype...the bigger the bill and let's face it, the organizers are not doing it for fun, they also want to make a buck.

I have made peace with this and now pick races rather than trying to do one every weekend...Sani2C, 3Towers and Trailseeker series.

Bad example. Those are assets or consumables and they will last a lot longer than the three or four hours "enjoyment" that you get from a race. I have stopped racing as the cost is getting too high. I used to do an MTB race every month sometimes twice a month. The costs were aroung the R70-R100 mark for the entry. That has increased a lot over the past few months/years. Add up the cost of fuel, race drink, gels, breakfast/lunch and refreshments (If you take your family along it gets expensive) You are looking at around R500 per outing (conservatively if you are the only one racing). I now do less races but choose which ones offer me the most value and yes goodie bags count. Race less and closer to home. I am enjoying the social aspect of my cycling more nowadays.

Largely irrelevant, just beacause you spend half a mil on a car it doesn't mean you won't complain about the cost of fuels going up 25c every month.

This has been discussed a lot here. I'm merging your thread with some of the others, but keeping your thread title.
