There is absolutely no way you can compare a 1995 26er to a new 29er. If you had a new 26" HT your observation would be exactly the same when compared to your '95 HT.

I'm busy lining up a Anthem X vs Anthem X29 test. A proper back-to-back test with as little as possible variables. Trying to get a HT too to sommer test 26"HT b2b with Anthem X to hopefulle lay to rest which quicker in that department too.

Next month, Camp vs Shimano! biggrin.gif

I can't wait. Time to settle this once and for all.

I think you could commercialise this idea. The scope is endless:

Flat vs risers

With/without bar ends

Hairy vs shaved legs

Baggies vs lycra

...

Perhaps our local bike magazines might even pay you for some original content.

Pros and cons to everything...can't have your cake and eat it, unless you are burry or suzie

The saying is "can't eat your cake and have it". You can have it and then eat it, but you can not eat and then still have it.

Cause you wear big shoes and baggy trousers when you ride it

Nah, I am just wondering about this senseless mindless comment that so many make.

On the contrary most clowns ride small wheeled bikes, so who has the clown bikes now ?

Why is it a clown bike ?

It has commonly been called a clown bike for some time now - possible reference to a circus bike because it is different, I'm not sure. The Yeti man on the top tube of the Yeti Big Top has a red nose and clown shoes. Even the very model name has reference to a circus tent - Big Top.

You clearly didn't read in to my hint of sarcasm.

The Big Top, well Yeti are clowns themselves for doing this (imho), as I said I have never seen clowns on big wheeled bikes, uni-cycles, tricycles and small wheeled bike, so I honestly don't get the reference.

@Crow, dunno what do you think ?

I know two guys who rode the ARGUS on a clown bike Tandem like that.

Says nothing about terrain. 29er could be genuinely faster, but it could also be that that specific trail or section is better suited to a 29er.

Yip, was tested an the Canary Singletracks in Jonkershoek, lots of obstacles and rocky terrain, 29er heaven so to speak

The phrase's earliest recording is from 1546 as "wolde you bothe eate your cake, and have your cake?" (John Heywood's 'A dialogue Conteinyng the Nomber in Effect of All the Prouerbes in the Englishe Tongue')[1] alluding to the impossibility of eating your cake and still having it afterwards; the modern version (where the clauses are reversed) is a corruption which was first signaled in 1812. Further misconception has been perpetuated in main-stream media by Douglas Pace[citation needed] during his argument that it is in fact the order of the eating and having which matters, similar to the chicken and the egg conundrum.

Well, fact is clowns ride funny bicycles. We now that. Some 29ers look funny, but its only because we're used to the "look" of a bike with 26" wheels. I think it will be years and years before we can even consider debating whether 26" bikes will die a slow death. Lots to happen before then. Chances are we'll never get there with the End of the World every other day!

I have ridden 29er HT and duals and it make sense for certain applications / conditions. At the end of the day you have to figure out what is the most riding you do (eg 80% of what I do is trail OR smooth jeep track OR whatever) and then buy a bike for that. A 29er WONT be fastest everywhere. Neither will a 26er be. Same with a hard tail or AM bike.

Problem is guys are upgrading (in other words coming of older bikes) to 29ers and then compare the two. Doesn't make sense. And it's not just with 29ers. Guys come off beaten-up old HT's to a Spez Epic and then proclaim to the whole world that its the best bike EVER.

Anyway, each unto his own.

Done. Giant is on board. Good idea Velouria, will phone Tread to see if they'd be interested as a LOT of effort will go into this. Control tyres, proper timing (thanks to the guys at Mobii) and the likes.

The rest has been done. Results as follows:

Flat vs risers

Risers almost always

With/without bar ends

Depends on the riding you do. Without for me, thanks. (nothing to do with looks or what other people think though!)

Hairy vs shaved legs

Depends, how old is she?

Baggies vs lycra

Lycra for marathon / XC / road, baggies for the rest

Well said Crow. Just funny how quickly people get worked up by tongue in the cheak comments re the whole 29r vs 26r debate. Relax guys, and enjoy whatever bike you're riding.
