Hills! Love em or hate em, they are part and parcel of the jol

Find that comfy gear, get into that routine, get comfy and go. I find daydreaming helps - and I do that a lot when grinding up the hill. Get your breathing right - its part of that rhythm. I learnt to breathe right during my running days years ago. I also do regular core strenght exercises - do a search on one called 'The Plank' and the occasional 10/12k run.

I also only ride once a week with a few early morning spin sessions thrown in, with family, work, lenghty drives to work and back thrown in for good measure

I have the Magalies Monster looming in 8 weeks and there is a futhermucker of a climb involved there. Need to do a lot more in the coming weeks to enjoy, never mind finish it.

I just do all my training up hill, that way I know all the climbs well when it comes down to racing, and I prefer it to the flat.

A 100km+ training ride must be hell for you... doing it all up hill...

But seriously, I think the advice given doesn't match the level the OP is at. No offense, but if you can barely manage a hill in a training ride, then you shoudn't be thinking about HR training, intervals and all of that. First of all, ride your bicycle until you achieve some sort of level or fitness and from there decide - continue the fun like is or set goals and try to achieve something more. I don't think the OP is at that point yet.

Took the SS to Welwenpas a week ago and found the climbs to be ok on the SS with no real strain.

Wow ! Respect! I also rode there last Sunday. I used all my 24 gears but mostly the smaller ones. :whistling: And I was shattered when I came home - granted the headwind on my way home helped - but shattered.

A two months or so ago I would have walked alot of those climbs on the SS, but fitness is getting better and the more I have suffered on the climbs the easier they become on the next ride out.

so today I attempted my first interval session. Found a smallish hill and did it three times, as can be seen from the image below. I will ride easy again tomorrow and then hit the same hill route on Tuesday and Thursday next week. Will post the same image to see how things progress.

is this the correct way to be approaching intervals ?

Not sure how long each interval took you, but with intervals you should try and keep the times for each constant. So a bit of self-pacing/restraint during the first, and some HTFU during the last one(s)

Heman, just had a look. The first one took me about 7 minutes, the second one 6 minutes, and the last one also 6 min. And I was starting to get little white dots in my eyes, so I thought I should slow it down.

And this was on the middle blade, but granny gear on the back.

I am trying to lose weight, 2 kg's to be exact, but it's been an 8 month battle.

A little trick i learnt from a modelling friend was after a meal to go into the bathroom and gooi your finger down your throat. Ive dropped 8kgs in a matter of days...

Slowbee, how long did you rest in between the intervals. My program tells me to say, go 8 min up the hill and rest 10min between each interval. But I guess it depends on what you want the results to be. .

Someone else might help a bit more???

Cool idea. I will learn from this as well.
