Coffee machine

Recommended Posts

I bought an Aeropress a while ago to use at work. (I have a Delonghi Icona at home but wanted nice coffee at work as well)

My Aeropress is now at home and I use it every day instead of my Delonghi. I find that even using the same beans (Single origin from my local roaster) I get different flavour profile from each "machine"

Only way to get better than Aeropress in my experience is a full on proper high pressure espresso machine. 6 or 7 friends have bought them after trying a cup from mine.

I think some guys use them as their standard way to taste a bean.

Can't recommend them enough!

I'm not as greedy as you V12... A single group slayer would do for me...

For me too.... but I will tell you this.... configuring one is f...ing difficult - worse than trying to get your wife to agree on house decorations.... WAY too many options... and I will say nothing about the cost either... a divorce might well be cheaper..... and may well be inevitable if you tell her what the cost is... :)

Slayer is more important than grapes. ... and costs more than a new set of grapes. .. or a turbo. .. :)

Coffee guru hubbers...

The boss has finally agreed to consider getting a "pod type" automatic machine for the office (+-80 people).

He wanted to go the nespresso route (which I agree with for simplicity) but was informed that the home machines will burn out very very quickly in an office environment with that much use.

He is now considering the rental route, we have been offered a rental machine with 400 pods a month for R2700 pm.

We don't get to choose the pods we want, they give us a selection... I was told this is a nespresso system but the pods are flatter than the standard nespresso pod.

Any other options we should be considering... The office is very cost sensitive, they are simply trying to provide the machine, we as the staff would ultimately buy the pods we end up using.

Anyone know any good deals or have a contact for the rental option I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance.

Buy a Jura machine that matches the volume you will require each day. Staff then make arrangements for who buys beans etc

Yeah I agree with JoeBoy. Buy a Jura and be done. For an office it's the best.

Pods are really expensive, and generate a LOT of waste (which is not easily recyclable plastic mixed with organics and metal...) - rather see if you can rent a super automatic machine - it will be cheaper to operate by quite a large margin - and you can use fresh coffee too - more choice of coffee and better taste.

Thank you for all the comments...

I will put the idea of using a fresh coffee machine over the pod idea.

We are also very concerned about what to do with the wasted pods... Not very useful at all, and we are environmental engineers.

The trick is trying to figure out how the beans work, but I have some ideas.

Coffee club.... Everyone contributes a fixed amount per month, and no one winges about how much others are drinking. Adjust the fixed amount according to demand.

You will figure it out.... :)

There are other machines than Jura as well - for an 80 person office, that's going to be a fair sized machine...

Pay close attention to how many cups a day they are rated for - probably you can do a few more than the ratings - especially on the commercial bean to cup machines - like these - where the ratings are essentially quite conservative.

Some of them do hot chocolate too...

Hey guys

I currently have burr-grinder / moka-pot / good-local-supply-of-roasted-beans setup.

The coffee tastes great and I have no complaints about my coffee system, except for the milk. I do have a frother, which is nice for cappuccinos... but I want the good stuff. I want a steam-based frother to get that silky flat-whites / latte tops.

No I understand that they need the pressured steam which you get with a full-on espresso machine, but is there any way to get these separately?

You can make a stovetop frother out of a small pressure cooker - add wand...

But you can buy them - never actually seen one in real life..
