would measuring current tamper not be better?

i did this, got 58mm on the head, but there is about 1-1.5mm on either side.

so i'm not 100% but i'm probably around 58.2-3 damn i need to double triple check

defeats the whole purpose of this exercise. they want a tighter fit  when tamping. That's why they are measuring their PF cup and looking for a custom made one with a pretty handle (that is adjustable as well).

Anyone here have a Rocket Espresso machine from their domestic range? Are they worth the money or should I be looking at something else. I would like to delve into the realm of making real coffee at some point.

Guys how did you measure up?

i get 58.something but struggled to get exactly.

string then check with a ruler

I used a vernier gauge - could have used a bore guage but I dont have one that size

might be a stupid question, are all baskets the same though? what if you use a variety?

anyone try measuring a puck?

where does one take the actual measurement?

Not all baskets are the same, but if used in the same portafilter they will be similar enough to use the same tamper.

Right, so far it's three tampers.

Guys what tolerances are you guys working with? Just looking for some guidance on the optimum would be on a basket size of 58.72mm. Measured another basket and that came in at 58.92mm.

I was also in that range for the 2 baskets I measured - but I took a bit off to give me some leeway when ramping - I have used one that was too tight before and it was very difficult to insert straight - kept binding on the side walls

I'm working with VST 18g baskets. Using a vernier caliper, the inside diameter at the top is 58.7mm but it slopes slightly down towards the ridge, 58.6mm. In other words, the basket wall is not exactly vertical, which is the logical result of the basket being formed on a mandrel.

My current tamper is 58.1 and it leaves a tiny ridge of untamped coffee around the edge of a full (18g) basket once tamped. 58.4 is my best estimate of what will fit without binding, but exert pressure over the whole puck.
