Coffee machine

Recommended Posts

That is like peeing into a 40 knot south wester.... you won't be happy with the results - and  you won't sell it for anything close to what you pay - unless you buy second hand...

You can pic them up for about R3500-4000 second hand, but if its anything like peeing into that South Easter I won't both.

If I'm going to start keeping an eye on the second hand market, what machine would you recommend I keep an eye out for? As I said I don't have anything near the R12k + budget that most things decent require. That being said, I don't mind getting my hands dirty and putting a bit of energy into something that just needs some TLC.

If you can find a decent condition one for 1500 then maybe.

You just have to keep an eye open looking for second hand quality machines - saw an Electra lever for 6 k a couple of days ago on Facebook.

Rather buy a decent hand grinder and an aeropress first and master those - while you keep an eye open - many ways to enjoy good coffee but all of them start with good fresh coffee and a great grinder.

V12 has the right advice as always..

Leave the cheapie machines and master some manual brew, you will certainly have a better coffee experience!

Thanks for the input.

Already have an Aeropress and Moka pot that I use a lot when travelling, and a cheap home espresso machine from Boardmans, that is my usual go to. It's been operating for over 10 years already! It needs replacing so that why I'm asking advise.

Get a regular supply of fresh coffee from from Deluxe, though normally get it ground for me as my hand grinder has given up the ghost.

Look for a rancilio silvia and grinder, the best home set up to start with in my opinion!

Hi all you coffee guru's, I have not been on here for a while.  Still doing the moka pot and aeropress at home.  Lately I have been struggling with the moka pot, the filters keeps on blocking and it does not always use all the water.  Have been cleaning, looking at the grind, fiddling with the heat etc.  I am thinking of buying a replacement filter plate and gasket set and see if it is better.  been using the old one for over 6 years.

also think it is time to invest in a better grinder, as I have been using the same old cheapie and it served me well.  Not in a position to spend 10 large on a grinder, but have been looking at something like the hario v60.  Any other recommendations or links to decent second hand will be appreciated.

Regards,

Try soaking the filter in lemon juice or vinegar a few times + boiling water. Actually what finally worked was lots of lemon juice + water in a small pot(enough to completely cover the filter) and boiled on the stove. Then once its dry hold the filter in between finger + thumb of one hand and flick it with your finger of the other hand to dislodge the last stubborn bits.

I had my able metal aeropress filter block up from not rinsing it off immediately after use and that was what eventually unblocked it.

Regards,

Put the filter in the dishwasher - should clean it pretty well.

More likely there is coffee residue in the riser pipe that is blocking it - and you going to need some brushes and pipe cleaners to get it out if it's hard/ish - you can either crush a dishwasher tablet or buy a specialist coffee detergent - BUT you will need to soak and scrub to get it out.

This is not to say that the seal is not old and hard and may be due for a replacement - but usually it leaks pretty obviously when its done. Can't imagine you would easily wear out the filter.

Shot thanks for the tips. Will have look. I have been using a needle to clear. Probably not the best idea

Works a treat.

any advice with regards to entry level type grinder?  thanks.

Hand or electric?

Hand grinders - Hario Skerton or Porlex mini - I prefer the Porlex, but it's more cash than the Hario

Electric.... what's the budget?
