That is a really hard budget point to hit...

Grinder I would recommend without budget restrictions - Sette 270 W - https://capecoffeebeans.co.za/collections/coffee-grinders/products/baratza-sette-270-series-conical-burr-coffee-grinder?variant=44683984452

This grinder will be fine for a long long time.... for anything from pour over to espresso - but it's not cheap.

And if you want to go cheap, you could do this - Also available in blackl - it will last you a year - maybe 3. Everything else above is probably good for easily 5 - 10 years.

We have the same ideas on grinders...

Not much in that range but also not bad just out..

The only one I disagree on is the sette... Its had some issues! I was dead set on one until the issues started cropping up! Would have sold my Mazzer in a heartbeat to fund it.

Maelkoenig/Baratza will sort those out - they always have - but (as you know) speed of grinding is important to me... and unless you go BIG you don't get that - except for the Sette. (and no I have not bought one yet - I am still a Robur fan (annoyed wife and all))

I am also of the opinion that the Baratza Encore is not espresso capable (some people will disagree)

Howzit guys, I usually make coffee with my espresso machine. I have always had a moka pot, but it did not fit on my gas stove top - always off balance or falling in one or other direction. But I moved at the start of the year and just realised my moka fits on the new gas stove top - so I'm keen to stert using that a bit.

What should my grind look like for a moka pot? Not sure if it should be very fine, or more coarse?

They are pretty forgiving grind wise - Should be pretty close to an espresso grind - maybe a touch courser but definitely not pour over course .

Check the bottom of your mokka pot - if it's bowed outward then thats the problem with a flat stove - panel beat it with a 5 pounder.... which will hold for a while and then you have to do it again - alternately buy a very high quality one - Bialetti - in stainless steel...

Thanks, I will start at one or two steps coarser than my espresso grind and take it from there.

The reason it was falling over on my previous stove top is that the "claws" which a post rests on over the open flame were too far apart for the bialeti to rest on, it only made contact with 2 or 3 of the sides and was off balance. This isn't case with the new stove top - the gaps are much smaller and the bialeti can rest nicely on it. But I will keep that in mind if it does happen to bow out...

Hi V12 and Nerd, thank you very much for the time and links to get me pointed in the right direction.  It seems like if I want to do it properly, I will have to save some more and look between the 5-7 grand range.  would hate to buy a grinder now, and in a year or two when I want to move to something better than a moka pot, not be able to do a decent espresso grind.  thx again

between the 2

Wega Max 5.8 Instant Espresso Grinder

or

Mahlkonig Vario Home Coffee Grinder

Wega - but it's an aesthetics thing for me... :)

Buy a decent hand grinder now and then save.... you always need a hand grinder for trips away... Porlex is a great one, and not insanely expensive - and can do espresso grinds easily.

Thank you. I will also consider this option.

Malkhonig K30 for the win with a La Mazzoca G3 (manual of course).

Just putting it out there for the best setup and most unaffordable setup.
