Today my wife and I took a day off (been working hard lately) and drove around the four-passes route (Sir Lowry's, Viljoens, Franchhoek and Helshoogte), stopping for lunch in Franchhoek. As we drove I was thinking about the times I've ridden the same route - I remembered the people I was with, the places we stopped, how I felt at every point on that route. But, most of all, I was just amazed that I could have done it at all. It seems so much further in a car. Even my short training rides are special. I love that I can do that, with nothing but a 10 kg contraption and my legs and lungs.

It makes the idea of having to work for a living, seems utterly ridiculous. It's where I go to make sense of it all, where I disappear in a bubble of selfishness. It's where my child hood dreams still flicker and come to life for a short while. It's where mother nature shakes my hand and say: 'Good having you around'. It is my religion...

2 wheels and helmet time. Riding my mtb or motorcycle gets me to that place from where the world makes a lot of sense. The stress relief, the focus required to just stay alive on 2 wheels, the exhileration, freedom, sense of being alive and experiencing life at a visceral level. All of the above. But sometimes it is also a quiet cycle through the park with my loved ones , going nowhere slowly. Many of the best experiences of my life have been associated with 2 wheels!

I know... I may have to pull out all the stops and move over to lycra and shaved legs. Girls are suckerd for guys in tighty pants with smooth legs.

Oh no! I'm upping the game for CM... I'm wearing a suit and tie! Girls like those even more than lycra! Especially if they can see money hanging out the pockets!

Like many others it started off as a health thing and now its like a drug, a good addiction I'd say. If I dont get T.I.T.S I'm grumpy. This past two months of not riding has been the worst time of my life easily.

As Patches said, if I'm on the bike i forget about anything else, and just for that few hours it's my time only. indeed a luxury!

In fact in varsity a friend and I were going to design pants with see-thru pockets and some fake Platinum cards and R100 notes on the inside. Girls would flock! If we sold them to the other nerdy engineering guys I'm pretty sure we would have made some real money

So used to doing sport since school. Got injured after years of squash-playing. After six months of doing nothing a friend suggested riding to to something gentle to the knee. Then he stopped shortly after, I sortof also, till I decided stuff this - and got the road bike. No looking back, I just have to get my "fix" - and if I don't get out and ride enough, I get "the look" from the mrs to say just get on your bike... Now the mtb is also there (yeah, call me a dirt roadie) and I just love getting out there and sometimes just chill and enjoy the outdoors, other times see how hard I can go. I've learnt a lot and I keep learning.

Daughter is growing up and shortly it'll be huge fun - we already did one (very short) ride together, and she just loves it!

Obviously I love to see progress. No, I'm not winning races. No, I'm not A-group. Do I care? No - not my aim. I have my set of goals for this coming season. Some of them are just "participation" - esp on the mtb front. My friends don't ride, so I don't talk cycling to them - life is wider than that. When they ask, I answer, but keep it short. My cycling buddies is a different case, but I have no reason to get into wee-ing contests, because I'll loose most of them anyways! :whistling:
