A race comes down to the final sprint and a racer suffers a mechanical few meters before the finish line. The rider loses his control, the video about it has gone viral all over the internet.

The Belgian Cross Country Championships took place this past weekend in Beringen. And once again the mountain bike title was taken by a cyclocross racer. One might not be surprised by this outcome- in Belgium the cyclocross community is much bigger than the mountain bike one. Moreover, cyclocrossers can ride in the MTB nationals without any problem, while mountain bikers, on the other hand, cannot ride the cyclocross nationals with the same ease. On Sunday, things heat up.

Mountain biker and recently selected Olympian Kevin Van Hoovels (Versluys) and cyclocross talent Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb Revor) both headed toward the finish line. Van Hoovels had a small advantage and seemed to be heading for victory until his foot slipped off his pedal. Pauwels powered away and won the Belgian Mountain bike Championships for the second consecutive year. At the finish line, Van Hoovels threw his bike away and started crying uncontrollably. Afterwards, many people had something to say about his reaction.

The video named "Loser mountain biker cries like a baby after lost sprint" went viral. It has been viewed 45,868 times so far in two days and many comments followed, especially below the video. Some people think that his reaction is unacceptable and, instead, he should prove himself worthy of his Olympic qualification. Others believe that they both had equal chances and it was a fair race, he shouldn’t be sorry for the outcome. A third party says that Van Hoovels is a true sportsman who loves his sport and the setback caused his frustration and tears.

In Beringen, some fans standing in the finish area tried to comfort him, others were screaming in disappointment- somebody even threw a stone at Pauwels, they called him 'coward', 'a shame for the sport’.

They yell out their frustration about the fact that in Belgium cyclcocross gets all the money and all the attention. They feel that mountain biking is always forgotten in Belgium, moneywise and in the media. If you know that a cyclocross racer can easily earn a very nice living, while the only pro mountain bike rider, Kevin Van Hoovels has to live on a basic survival fee for top athletes, you might understand the rivalry. All the other mountain bikers have nine to five jobs, are still studying or work for the military in a special athletes program.

Versluys Team sent out an 'open letter' saying that they they want to distance themselves from the things that are said in and about the video. They don't want to accuse cyclocross racers of being unfair and they congratulate Pauwels for the win.

Yesterday evening Van Hoovels was on the Belgian TV. He hadn’t seen the video yet and he is probably unaware that for the rest of his life he’ll be the “crying mountain biker”. He said he hadn’t noticed the camera’s and wasn’t aware that he was being filmed.

Van Hoovels, who became Belgian champion two years ago, will represent Belgium in the Olympic cross country race along with cyclocross specialist Sven Nys.

I'm sure I saw Kevin Evans blubbing in a tv interview after Brandon Stewart cut him off during a race? Anyone remember that?

Yeah I remember that, difference between a bit of a blubber and a full on '5 yr old I just dropped my ice cream' tantrum though.

Ask me, I've dropped my ice cream before... wasn't a pretty scene.

And people refer to Andy Schleck in the female, cant recall him throwing a hissy fit like that when he had a mechanical.

Yeah, poor old Andy just has one of those faces. You know, the kind you'd like to hit with a bat. Maybe a swarm of bats.
