My Girlfriend wants to start riding with me. MTB

Should I buy a new bike of around R 2500? What would you recommend and where?

Or should I buy a secondhand bike?

New bike will be recommended but try to spend a little bit more.

With a new bike they can swop out parts to get the fit perfect.

With a secondhand bike you will get better value for money...

Tough one.

Its great to ride together, a must do for her will be a skills clinic if she is a real beginner.

Then a couple doses of patience

.

.

.

A couple more

.

.

Dont tell her to hurry up as this has a direct effect on how loved you will feel that evening

Dont ask if you must call a helicopter for a medevac if she falls, even if its in jest

Dont tell her to peddal faster, also has a direct effect on how loved you will feel as well

I have suffered through all this and can state the following:

Before we ride my camelback is clean

It is filled

it has snacks packed in it for when we stop on the ride, sometimes I even have biltong!!

It pays off, goodluck!

I would hire her a bike just to see if she likes it.Bought my wife a bike and almost two years later and the bike has about 40km on it and a lot of dust :whistling:

You will not get much for R 2500 . Something to ride around the suburb maybe.

Run walk for life membership ?

Do you ask to go along to the pottery class or cookie lessons or whatever it is women do? You found cycling first .

Sorry ignore. This comes from a been through the mill , dyed in the wool cynic.

good advice:

1)borrow/hire a bike to see if she likes it.

2)if she does, but needs a bit of attention in the ability department - get a third party (not you) to teach her some basics.

3) if she's serious about riding properly, spend more than 2.5k

My experience

My wife and I ride together every weekend. It's the best quality time you can spend together. We love doing it.

It is however not the easiest thing to get going. Don't ever tell her to go faster or to keep up. You adjust to her pace and skill. Always encourage her.

The fact that she wants to ride with you is 99% of the battle won.

Let me know if you want to join us for a ride at some point.

Make sure you buy her a ladies saddle! I know lots of girls that were put off because it was so uncomfortable when riding on a bike with a men's saddle.

And be careful when one day she's better than you, and you have to give her the car keys at the next race. Just ask me for pointers if needs be ...

I used it as an excuse to get a new bike, gave her my old one. Turned out she was a natural.

Then got her a second hand racing hard tail.

Then forked out for a road bike for training.

Followed by going halvies on a second hand soft tail.

Expensive exercise, but worth every cent when she rides faster than the boys on the single track, and styles on the down hill tracks that some of the boys are too chicken to ride!

Bottom line, get her something nice, its for both of you.
