Wow! What a rip off! Not to mention, the crap after service! Bridge cycles, if you are reading this, you owe this man a wheel. Not to mention an apology instead of a stink attitude! No one would complain about something for no reason! Sort this man out!

i only have one mechanic who EVER works on my bike and that is Lourens Calitz @ Cycle Centre in Edward str, he is a master wheelbuilder and really good!

Cycle Centre is the bomb, no complaints there and offer good personal service. Also had my rear wheel rebuild there still running like a machine...

Now that you mention that....lol...not sure, but I just can't find myself to trust any mechanic...but I normally shop around when I want to buy something as I go for the best deal...

No ways... He left with his 'packet' not wanting them to touch his bike again... He'll send their parts back in the same bag...

Thatnks for the warning. Based on this info, I will never ever set foot in that shop again, and will advise my friends to do the same. This kind of dishonesty makes me ill. I would have laid a charge of theft without hesitation.

 

Bridge owes your friend a new wheel.

I am very careful about who touches my bike. Only on extreme circumstances have I trusted a new mechanic with my bike and this would be in emergencies only (on a road trip and needing something done where I don't have the tools for the job on me). Even then I make it clear what I want done and what they should not touch as well. I always ask that they phone me if additional work / replacement is required as well.

I am fortunate to have a good bike mech looking after my baby and the nice thing about a good relationship is that it becomes almost telepathic. You walk in, he knows what you want before you've said much and they pick up and sort out (usually for free) other small niggles that you have not mentioned to them as well.

I get phone calls for unscheduled replacements and my answer is usually the standard "What would you do if it was your bike?" so they get clearance for most items that needs replacement.

I have also benefitted from my LBS's good relationship when I needed warrantee replacements and repairs and I had some insurance repairs that was handled by my LBS in such a way that all items that may have sustained damage was replaced, even if damage was not visible from the outside.

I also have occasions where I would say "replace", he has a look and tells me that a good service would sort it out, so don't think that he's just trying to make a quick buck on me when I walk in there.

He has also on occasion allow me to watch him while he was working on my bike, even if this slows him down and I have received quite a few tricks of the trade tips on sorting routine maintenance issues out quickly.

I have to drive 45 minutes to get to the shop, so often I do the small things myself (if my repair time is less that 90 minutes, its quicker to do it myself) and in doing things yourself you make mistakes at times. He's sorted those out and showed me the right way to do stuff in these instances.

Often I wonder if I should take my bike to a shop closer, then a topic like this sobers me up really fast.

But Williams LBS / Bike Porn Shop is always worthwhile visiting. Even if you are just driving by!
