SAPS reaction to vehicle theft in Parkdene this morning

Got woken up by multiple gun shots this morning at 4am, After calling the security company and making sure all was safe in yard I ventured outside my gate. I was greeted by about 7 Police vans, 1 flying squad, 1 venture full of cops and 3 unmarked police cars. Must have been about 20+ Police officers running around our street with fire arms drawn.

Apparently a vehicle was stolen in Parkdene a short while earlier. The owner called the Parkdene Police cellphone. The Police blocked off the main road leading to Kingfisher heading over the highway, suspects tried to avoid the roadblock by heading into our neighborhood only to be met by a Police vehicle. Shootout ensued but unfortunately the suspects managed to get away.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the reaction of the SAPS. Being a victim of a high jacking about 4 years ago where the police pitched up 4 hours later did leave me with no faith in the cops. I am now starting to regain some trust in them.

Our company does vehicle tracking and recovery and there too I have notice an improved reaction time by the authorities when we report incidents.

It definitely helps having the cell number of the patrol car for your area. Dont know if these numbers are published by the SAPS but the neighbourhood watch guys should have all those details.

That's a pretty good response.

Last year on old years eve or Christmas eve there were a couple of wall jumpers in our neighbourhood and they didn't have patrol vehicles available, so they sent the flying squad over. Didn't find the buggers, but they did spend a good 3h searching the area for them.

The problem is that sometimes all the vehicles in the area are on call-outs in other areas, and a major problem that we have is that there aren't enough vehicles. Yeah, the MPs have more police vehicles than the cops themselves.

well done SAPS, we often hear the bad reports and it's uplifting to know they are making in roads against crimes committed, all we need now is the judicial process to improve in expediting sentencing.

More impressive if they had actually managed to catch them. That is a lot of manpower used considering the result.

My biggest problem is still the phoning of 10111 and not getting answered...

actually need to figure out if they have another number in our area, which is actually monitored.

Good morning. No SwissVan I did not get the exact street of where the vehicle was taken.

I do however have some good news. After the incident I have made a concerted effort to do my part in my community by joining our local CPF. Speaking to one of the members last night on patrol I was told that the one suspect jumped a wall in the same street as where the incident took place. He hid himself in the dogs kennel for about 3 hours while the cops were still busy investigating the scene. When the owner of the house went outside to feed the dogs he's daughter noticed the suspect hiding in the kennel. they called cops and they managed to apprehend him after yet another chase. I really hope he will get some time in jail.
