Wow, I can't believe people are actually defending this as acceptable riding behaviour.

The massive friction between cars and cyclists really needs to be transformed. It's not really about cars vs bikes. It should be the drivers and cyclists who respect the road against the D005 car drivers and D005 cyclists who don't.

You Gautengers really need to buy looser underwear. Cycling is supposed to be a pleasure, yes? It doesn't always have to be nose-to-tail-smack-your-botty-at-the-obstruction stuff, surely? What happened to chatting, enjoying the scenery, and the process of cycling; riding, not racing. I'm sure the guys were adequately aware of the road conditions and volume of traffic.

What is the ICGs policy on safety? http://www.cyclesafe.co.za/images/M_images/pdf_button.png http://www.cyclesafe.co.za/images/M_images/printButton.png http://www.cyclesafe.co.za/images/M_images/emailButton.png Written by Administrator Tuesday, 21 December 2010 10:41

The Illovo Cycle Group has a good reputation for safety and responsible riding. We stop (or at the least slow down and check) at stop streets, red traffic lights and call for traffic or obstructions. We give way to traffic that has right of way.

Our aim is to enjoy the ride and get back home safely. Not kill the guy behind us. Our mindset tends to reflect that ethic. Last Updated on Tuesday, 21 December 2010 10:44

It's this kind of attitude that annoys me too.

You have cars coming up behind you. Move over or don't cry when you get knocked down.

problem is actually that you don't have a real understanding of the dangers riding on a road, especially one like that with no shoulder.

Nor do you fully grasp the laws of the road...

(That picture aside - I agree the one guy is a little too far to the right thumbdown.gif )

For passing ANY vehicle, you need to wait until it is safe to do so, and then pass with a sufficient margin between you and said vehicle (usually in the next lane) Yes: bicycle = vehicle.

Any half-decent roadie will tell you you should ensure you have a "presence" on the road (whilst keeping safety in mind of course) - so where there is no shoulder, you first ensure you have a "bailing" option to the left, then you keep sufficiently to the right, in case you have a chipped-off road end; and you also "force" other vehicles to not try and pass you in the same lane, if there is insufficient space for you and a vehicle on the left of the centre line...

On the last topic, throw the picture in reversion --> do you think there is enough space to the right of the car, for a single-file cyclist?

Yes, there is, but barely. Now notice where the car would be in the face of uncoming traffic (remember the picture is in reversion)

Ah, you got it, I see: the car still would not have been able to pass safely.

(And to the commenter on roadies and single file --> first learn the sport before commenting: Yes, we use the same "tools", being a piece of carbon et al on top of 2 wheels, but that is where the similarity ends.)

That's why you own a couch! If you want to chat, go out of the way on a mountain bike or something - the roads are there for transport, not for a leisurely chat. Cycling is not supposed to be a pleasure, it is supposed to be a sport. The pleasure is in doing the sport, not in chatting to 10 other guys out on the road. Yes a car can pass in the other lane, but if there was oncoming traffic, they would have to sit and wait for a big enough gap which is an unnecessary inconvenience to the people actually using the road to get somewhere (I am both a roadie and a driver and am 100% on the driver's side in this situation).

No offense here StevieL, but more to these threads in general.

Why ? What is the point of the thread ? What are you hoping to achieve ?

They, are not likely to read the thread and be concerned about it. If they are a part of a club, take it up with the club captain and/or their sponsors to get them to enforce the rules.

If this thread is to highlight to hubbers rule breakers, I am sure most already know when they break the rules of the road.

And lastly, if we all just concern ourselves with not breaking the law, instead of pointing out how everyone else breaks the law, we would get along fine. As has been said, just put on your indicator and overtake them as if they were a slow moving car. Less stress on your part.

I agree even if the road is quiet doesnt mean you can ride like a toss who makes the call between quiet and busy? should just get into the habit of doing the right thing the first time doing this sets a *** example to a newbie in the group who perhaps hasnt got the common sense and experience of reading road conditions then 2 weeks later it boo haha newbie is dead the experienced guys need to advocate safety all the time
