problem is actually that you don't have a real understanding of the dangers riding on a road, especially one like that with no shoulder.

Nor do you fully grasp the laws of the road...

(That picture aside - I agree the one guy is a little too far to the right thumbdown.gif )

For passing ANY vehicle, you need to wait until it is safe to do so, and then pass with a sufficient margin between you and said vehicle (usually in the next lane) Yes: bicycle = vehicle.

Any half-decent roadie will tell you you should ensure you have a "presence" on the road (whilst keeping safety in mind of course) - so where there is no shoulder, you first ensure you have a "bailing" option to the left, then you keep sufficiently to the right, in case you have a chipped-off road end; and you also "force" other vehicles to not try and pass you in the same lane, if there is insufficient space for you and a vehicle on the left of the centre line...

On the last topic, throw the picture in reversion --> do you think there is enough space to the right of the car, for a single-file cyclist?

Yes, there is, but barely. Now notice where the car would be in the face of uncoming traffic (remember the picture is in reversion)

Ah, you got it, I see: the car still would not have been able to pass safely.

(And to the commenter on roadies and single file --> first learn the sport before commenting: Yes, we use the same "tools", being a piece of carbon et al on top of 2 wheels, but that is where the similarity ends.)

Are you for real ? No offence, but an opening remark of "do you fully grasp the rules of the road" ?

And then you make a statement that says any half decent roadie will tell you you need a presence on a road ? I need to ask, are you decent ?

No offense here StevieL, but more to these threads in general.

Why ? What is the point of the thread ? What are you hoping to achieve ?

They, are not likely to read the thread and be concerned about it. If they are a part of a club, take it up with the club captain and/or their sponsors to get them to enforce the rules.

If this thread is to highlight to hubbers rule breakers, I am sure most already know when they break the rules of the road.

And lastly, if we all just concern ourselves with not breaking the law, instead of pointing out how everyone else breaks the law, we would get along fine. As has been said, just put on your indicator and overtake them as if they were a slow moving car. Less stress on your part.

Point taken.

But it is a bicycle and general cycling forum, that has a Rant n Rave sub section, so just exercising my right to have a rant at some pillocks who give roadies a bad name.

One day everyne will be in Google cars (well, those who can afford to drive) and then the car will take the appropriate action which is to wait and then proceed when safe to do so.

Hey, it's Friday as Sir M points out. Barney time! Let me throw this into the mix here ... for drivers and cyclists (and those of us who do both - it seems it's so rare that it has to be pointed out.)

Just to add some more stir to the pot, doesn't look as if the car up ahead made use of the 1.5m passing distance. Just saying.

There is such a fine line on these things, but I'm inclined to think that one should try and stick to the rules as often as possible. Let's not forget that idiot that mowed down a cyclist at the coast a while back. If I recall he was drunk and tried to flee the scene. Traffic volume may have been low at the time and this time it was the motorist who was to blame, but the point is that it only takes one car to kill a bunch of cyclists.

I was also reminded of this when running the Soweto Marathon last month, there were a lot of signs up commemorating those ladies killed by a driver in Midrand whilst out on a morning run some time back. That was also early morning and probably pretty light traffic, but again, only 1 car needed to extinguish 5 lives.

If StevieL had fumbled his camera and nailed a few of these guys during the recovery (yeh yeh, I know you were a passenger wink.png ) , we would have crucified him on this very site, irrespective of whether there were high traffic volumes or they were riding up to three abreast.

take it up with the club. I've done this a few times with idiots in my area, mainly because pointing out the error of their ways in person results in verbal abuse. you can just see the attitude of some of the responses here.

Let me just remind everyone 1.5ton car > 80-90kg cyclist. Its doesnt matter who is right or wrong when you are lying 6 foot under because of a pissed of driver.

And then there are the follow ons, the driver gets past this group and is p'd off, 2km down the road he encounters a cyclist on his own keeping out of the way, but because he is now p'd off he tries to take this cyclist out.

Think about more than yourselves people.

What happened to that driver from PE (I think it was) that killed the cyclist?

Why do I need to do that?

If they rode like they should be riding (like as far left as possible) then I wouldn't have to.

I mean big bloke centre pic is not even riding 2 abreast, but still feels the need to ride centre lane.

It because of habits like this that cause animosity between cars and bicycles.

Have you ever thought that on a road like that, they are actually riding defensively, forcing you to slow down and overtake giving a wide berth and not squeezing past and barely missing and making the ride totally unpleasant,

but you right they a bunch of w@@@ers and should be shot for riding there bikes on the road, the shock horror of it..
