...do it so should I?

Some prime examples:

Lycra

Cipless

29ers

Etc

Why do people believe that they should do something or ride something just because the pros who mostly get told what to do by their sponsors do so.

Sheep mentality? I say do what you want! Wear what you want! Ride what you want! As long as you are happy and you do it for yourself!

I can't see the benefit of Lycra. My baggies are extremely comfy, even on long rides, and any aerodynamic advantage it gives must be negligible at best (talking mtb here) and zero for anyone but a pro.

I can understand the benefits of a 29er for the xc mad majority of SA riders, but I'll stick with my 26er thanks.

I went from clipless to flats and I haven't found a reason yet to ever go back to clipless.

And you did it all because you made up your own mind. It works for you and you are comfortable doing it.

Too many people blindly follow the so called pros and do everything a magazine reviewer gets paid to say or because this or that pro does it. They completely miss the fun aspect of the sport and lie to themselves so much they start believing that its fun.

Sad

The sport has etiquette.

Consider that too?

You are talking about road. Road has a certain pedigree and immense history. The etiquette you speak of.

Mountain biking is the bastard step child of road racing. The rebellious evolution of the sport with the fathers of the sport like Tom Ritchey, Joe Breeze and Gary Fisher throwing themselves down mountains on clunkers. True invention, true freedom!

No, I'm referring to all forms of the sport - from freestyle to DH to XC, etc.

There's etiquette.

Personally, I wear what works for me.

On a few occasions I tried to ride with....lets cal it something other than lycra. (To the café on the corner type of ride) It felt frumpy. To much flapping and too much material all over. I guess I am used to lycra then.

So you saying because the pro's wear ball boxes, thigh pads and helmets I should not as that just makes me a "follower"?

Every sport in my opinion has its attire. Lycra has been part of cycling for ages. If you don't want to wear it no one is forcing you.

Trying to be like a pro. I really don't give two hoots about max Knox or whoever and what they do. This is me. I do what I like and I do it because I want to. I've never been a follower of the pro's.

And riding a 29er. I also think that depends on person to person. I love my 29er. My mate loves his 26er. Different strokes for different okes I suppose.
