But if I've read most the threads you have contributed to rightly, and after noticing about 2 mins ago that DJR called you a "crafty" rider on the gyroscope thread and seemed to hold you in awe, I think your added value might soon result in a rider of my skill level entering an emergency room ASAP!

Ha ha, you could not be more wrong.. really.

Great to see everyone treating a newcomer so nicely for a change :)

Excellent advice from DJR. Good luck Hooch, enjoy practising!

It's Tokai.. you know.

my only problem with Faerie Garden is that blutty bridge going down for some reason I have never managed to get ir right and I have gotten sick of falling in the river so I just walk over it now ...to hell with my ego..lol other than that faerie garden can be great fun in fact I end off all my rides at tokai with it and some days it all comes together and flows other days I end up in the tree's but thats mountainbiking I guess ...having said that I think I have fallen off more times at faerie garden than anywhere else at tokai....but never anything serious... touch wood..

Somehow it's always my rear wheel that gets kicked towards the river on that angled wooden brace at the start of the bridge. If it's dry and I get the angle right it's easy to get up and around the corner, but otherwise I get to wash the mud off my tyres... and my feet... and my shorts...

Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice...

Learn all my basics there, each ride you will find yourself walking a little less until one day it all falls together, and as has been said, do it up and down, you will learn a lot about handling and tech stuff on the way up.

But most important make sure you keep enjoying yourself

Also remember to keep your eyes up ahead on the trail and not on your front wheel. Sounds silly at times... but it will changing your riding. I often struggle with a root section or something, then say to my self look up and I make it no problem. Called Target Fixation.

I have found Meerendal to be an excellent area for a total beginner like myself. It's a bit of a trek if you're from the southern suburbs, but from what I've heard about Tokai... I'll rather do the drive!

The best way to get your confidence up on Faerie Garden is to ride up it a couple of times, helps in a huge way in seeing the line at each bend, and also how to attack the bridge. The bridge can sense your fear  , the moment you're off the attack you're on your a$$ . Find the line and ride it, keep momentum up and you should be ok.

Great trail to learn on btw, I cut my teeth down there before graduating to Vasbyt, Boulders and the Downhill tracks.

Re. Fairy Garden

I had one of my favourite crashes there, come to think of it, my favourite crash by far!

I was riding upwards and a beautiful young woman was riding down. I saw her in time, but as my luck would have it, she saw me too late. She got a fright and hit the brakes way too hard and in a flash she came over the bars, literally into my arms. Nobody got hurt, we both laughed, wished each other a good ride and went our own ways.

Like I said, my best crash by far!

Now I know why you're always riding that trail.

Hooch this is all good advice u getting. i remember my first time up in tokai. i was on the famous Bridge cycles loan stumpie. everyone was telling me that it was a great bike. my very first entry into the ST i didnt have the faith that the bike could make the turn and i went straight into the bushes. a few scratches and a damaged ego. but i kept on trying. today tokai is my playground. great thing about learning in tokai is that you gain great technical ability. u see it at the races. any small obstacle or water crossing every1 gets off and walks it. they dont even attempt it.

@DJR reminds me of my buddy, on the snake trails or Faerie cant remember, my buddy did some technical part, there was a nice women watching him. he cleared the obstacle looked at her then fell. when he dusted himself off, she told him " u made it but then u looked up at me, thats why u fell" we were in stiches after that.
