cat-i Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I sometimes commute - from randburg to parktown, partly though the spruit and party roads. commute's the only way that I can get some time on the bike together with the part-time studies and work. Been commuting (alone) for around 15 years, various routes in pretoria (groenkloof/fairy glen) and johannesburg (fourways / sandton / rosebank / randburg / parktown) - Haven't had issues and never felt unsafe. BogusOne Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Just a question... And yeah I might be paranoid... BUT why would anyone post their riding times and habits etc on an open forum?? Really very irresponsible Mads 1
MTBc Posted June 11, 2013 Author Posted June 11, 2013 I think Eldron had it closest to my sentiment: I strongly object to let fear rule my life and restrict my lifestyle. That being said, I was interested to hear from ladies' perspective. I didn't want to be presumptuous and say "cos I haven't had any risk, my missus will be ok". Valuable feedback so far, thanks hubbers. keep it coming.
RocknRolla Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 Ride alone 90% of the time. I am a little more carefull when riding alone - especially when riding technical terrain like Kingskloof I do a loop from home which is mostly dirt pavement and dirt road, with a wee bit of tar.Have had two run(ride)-ins with pedestrians, which ended with us on the floor. (Daytime) Best thing I could have done was get a decent light for the front, makes me see pedestrians and the trail very well when riding after dark.
MTBc Posted June 11, 2013 Author Posted June 11, 2013 Just a question... And yeah I might be paranoid... BUT why would anyone post their riding times and habits etc on an open forum?? Really very irresponsible That's why i left the "make results public" option off for 1. And the area's off the polls (as vague as possible). If you're a criminal that uses thehub for targeting purposes, I don't see how this is going to give out any more info that standing on a street corner and counting cyclists.

The actual posts from members is a bit more revealing though... MTBc 1
hopefield Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 When I am on the road I prefer to ride alone. That way I am not tempted to chat to whomever i am riding with, resulting in riding two abreast and not paying attention to traffic etc. When I am mountainbiking I never ride alone - I come off my bike way too easy to feel safe!
JGR Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) I watched a show on discovery some time back and it was about criminal profiling but the profiler was saying how helpless he feels as he can often 'spot' the person who would be attacked based on things like body language, they way the acted, interacted with people around them ect. Does any one think there is merit in this - ie some people will always be victoms. Of course if you are 6'6 and 100kgs likely hood is you wont be picked on .. but im more referring to the subliminal Edited June 11, 2013 by JGR
Mojoman Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 No issues on my own out here but to be honest I treat everyone I encounter as suspicious.Give a wide berth where possible and always be ready to run and split if I have to! Not sure how I would feel about riding in Joburg or Cape Town on my own though...
Cassie Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 You should also perhaps ask where the voter resides...i'm in the W-cape for example...but would not even THINK about riding alone in Gangster paradize!!

Rapunzel Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 nothing wrong with gangsters paradise. like cape town, there's areas where it's safe, and areas where it's better to stay away.agreed - ride on my own most of the time and we are spoilt in cpt with an abundance of safe routes (both on and off-road). However, the latest spate of road accidents affecting cyclists well inside the yellow line leaves me feeling vulnerable on the road.
Cassie Posted June 11, 2013 Posted June 11, 2013 I hit the road around 4:30 am and ride on the road in pretty remove areas. Rarely a car comes past, no-one around. I find it allot safer than riding in urban areas. If I see a silhouette walking on the road ahead of me, I take out my stun gun and go into possible fight mode untill I'm well past. Usually get home around 6:30 or so. Yeah, I lso got myself a lekka 20 million V tazer! Nice little pocket version...I just hope I don not accidentally zap myself... seriously - we can't always ride with someone...BUT you have to be extra vigilant and treat everyone and situation with suspicion....Eldron said it best...
