Pretty hot, not much hotter than alloy rims I imagine but just a guess.

 

I have seen a few carbon rims split from heat in the last few weeks.Lbs wouldn't let me take pics but they had a few sets of Zipp and Bontrager rims that had layers peeling or had cracked.

Where those full on carbon rims or those with a bonded braking surface and what kind of situation (long descent?) caused that. It should not happen unless its exceptional circumstances.

 

TBH if you know you are going to be riding in situations that could cause that then it might be better to stick to metal rims maybe....

 

Either way I'm sure somehow we will end up with discs on road bikes as standard, its like going from 9 spd cassettes to 11spd....why oh why.... yet mtbks are going to 1 x11 so how long before we get that on road bikes as well?

Road bikes needs disks like MTB's need disks. All disks do is make my life complicated now i got to bleed brakes etc instead of just being able to do simple cable adjustment. Give me cables and pads any day. I'm no pro and neither are 95% of all cyclists. Bet most people would not even notice the difference.

im all for disc's on road bikes. I commute daily and in winter I only use my MTB mainly due to the stopping power, especially in the wet. You have to be on the brakes in peak hour CT traffic. and because I am never going to be anything close to pro, I can live with the extra grams. safety first for me more important

All were on long steep descents.

One set was a 303 Firecrest clincher so guess full carbon rim.

On their website, Zipp qoutes the following: " Ours are the only carbon clinchers to pass stringent european safety testing without limitations on rider weight or brake pad options." This is for the 404 and 808. Nothing like this is qouted for the 303.

Would be nice I think... I known the arguments for and against, but I think benefits outweigh the negatives... Especially for your everyday tool like me... Wouldn't mind more stopping power in traffic and more reliable braking... The rim brakes often make a little poo come out on long decent and a car thinks they can make the "gap".

I had an oportunity to visit the Specialized factory/warehouse in Salt Lake City last October - the mid to top range road bikes were all fitted with disks and they were supposed to do a launch this year ?

Saw their R&D single speeds , MTBs and snow riding MTBs - the line up was absolutely mind blowing !

Ever thought about how the rims wear down with continuos usage of the brakes ? how many of you guys have ever thought about the reduction in thickness of the rim you are clamping you brake pads to ?

Not really a gain as a Capetonian roadie.

But, hey, another feature to consider.

Fashionable and cool. Just heavy...
