Hi Hayley

I have had 2 Rotator Cuff repairs and then a AC Joint Operation, in total 4 ops. 3 On one shoulder and one on the other...

I know all to well about these...

If you want advice let me know...

I received a torn rotator cuff injury at the 24hr race at Oak Valley last year. Went for physio, and biokineticist afterwards. Still struggle occasionally with it, especially when it gets cold.

rotator cuff Op.- shoulder was sort of dislocating too easily. has been ten years, never had any problems since, except it gets really sore when it is cold outside. Wierd stuff.

Injured my shoulder last year during an over the bars incident. Not sure exactly what I injured, ligaments I think. Was painful lifting arm up over a certain point and (stupidly) never went to doc / physio which would have made the rehab process much quicker (shoulder injuries seem to take a while to heal). Took a few months before it was right again.

Anyways, go see a Dr or physio :)

Hi Hayley,

Long time.

Yes, I tore Infraspinatus/supraspinatus muscles in my right rotator cuff when I was 26. Failing to recognise how important the rotator cuff is in stabilizing the whole shoulder and it's involvement in all shoulder/arm movements, plus the typical 20's Chuck Norris attitude resulted in a very annoying painful injury which persists until today and interferes with a lot of stuff. Do not leave it; have it checked out properly and sorted if necessary.

Howzeeet Hayls,

These links explain it best. You'll have to work out how much pain you are in and what you can and can't do. It's more important to be able to maintain good, proper form than using additional weight, so if its painful without weights than focus on the movements using just the weight of your arm at first and progessively build up as the tendons decrease in swelling and the muscle improves.

Had mine torn many years ago... Not stating this with any sort of certainty - but was "told-off" in a big way by my physio, for waiting a few months before getting it seen to - made matters worse. She said it's one of the more "difficult" areas to work on, it being quite deep in the tissue - if that makes any kind of sense - so the earlier it can be worked on, the better...

I also still battle a bit in the cold, but it was pretty much sorted eventually, so reckon you have nothing to lose getting it checked out properly...

+1 - after a few rotator cuff/ac joint and collarbone injuries of various degrees (from minor to very major) i've learnt you really don't want mess around with shoulders. get an opinion and take it from there. good luck

I have and there is only one man to go and see. DR Brekon at Morningside. After six months of physio and countless Rands spent i went to go see him and after a quick surgery i was on the mend.

I have done both sides, a real bugger of an injury, the shoulder is one of the most complicated joints to rehabilitate. I have had to go through some serious physio and lots of rehab exercises to keep mine in shape. If I do the strengthening exercises things are fine, but when I let things go the shoulder goes out of wack and starts to hurt again. Basically a lifetime of maintenance exercises are my medicine, but fortunately they can be done while watching isidingo

Ditto, I ended up spending a lot more on physio appointments and made my rehab so much longer having neglected to get it sorted ASAP

Always better to see a physio BEFORE a surgeon! Rather try to resolve it without an operation first and if that doesn't work, then get cut!

Can I refer you to a Psychiatrist? You are going to need one after a week of watching Isidingo...

H - you are in the wars... again... perhaps tiddlywinks?

Get it looked at quickly - generally RC injuries early surgical repair (if required) has a much better prognosis that late repairs, and where bikes are causative agents in RC injuries, there are often associated fractures - so much so that the RC injury is normally left to itself, and the fracture treated.

You know my number....

Hayley, I would suggest going to see a Dr. My boss also had a shoulder injury and the symptoms were the exact same as my grade 2 rotator cuff tear, but he had actually torn the tendon off his shoulder somewhere. If he had gone to a physio, he would've done more damage to his shoulder. It's best to confirm the exact problem before trying to solve it, and then accidentally treat the wrong problem.
