I have this dilemma that I need advice on please?

When one gets sick when do you stop training? Do I stop and get better? Or do I carry on until it starts to move to my throat?

At this point in time I just stop when I feel a bit of a cold creeping up on me. However, I have been thinking, during the TDF, Im sure one of those guys must pick something up during the 21 stages, up to what point do they carry on?

And in our case, where do you stop?

The other thing that I need to know is when do you actually start training again after being sick?

Stop as soon as you feel sick. Hit it with vitamins etc.

The body takes huge strain when even a little sick and training at this time will edge you close to a heart attack.

If it's only a slight sniffle... then i'd take the chance and go train... BUT, being sick and go training is looking for cr@p. Also, to keep on training when you're sick will put you on your @ss very quickly and keep you there for quite some time

I have read that above the neck you can carry on, below the neck - not a good idea. My Doc recons if a virus, then not a good idea (altough I don't know when it is a virus....).

I agree with JGR ito of heart attacks - extra strain on the body not a good idea.

Suppose you can also monitor heart rate and if takes longer to come up than normal or his higher than normal at rest, then not a good idea to train - or so they say.....

Also check your HR.

Check every day at the same time. Usually within minutes of waking up. When you feel a little iffy check your HR and compare with your avg resting HR. If they are more that 10% out don't train.

Bees, another side of the coin from my recent experience. Got sinus, kept training... got so "used to it" and ignored it, according to the doc. And then, in his word, the sinus merrily went ahead and poisoned everything around it over the course of a couple of months.

In the end I was off for a day (from work) and did not ride a measly one weekend. (Also, in that preceeding time my performance on the bike was much lower than training suggested, just felt tiiired on the bike. Anyways, doc said I am much worse off than I think - I realised that when I got back onto the bike! There is just NOTHING...

So avoid getting that ill, rather play it safe and you can recover earlier, better and start training without having taken as bad a hammering. (Yes, coming from me, that's a peach, but as you can see - first-hand experience!) Also, if you rest and heal up earlier, you may dodge the anti-biotics that may follow if you only go later. I'm still not sure whether it was my illness or the antibiotics that did the worst damage on the fitness levels.

In short, had I taken a week off end April, early May, sorted my sinus (with milder treatment) and then started training, I'd have been much better off.

When I have a sniffie (above the neck), I reduce the intensity of my training and still go ride until I feel close to full strength.

When my chest and/or lungs are not lekka (below the neck), I go to gym and do other stuff - not cardio-vascular.

Tsk tsk Gym work is considered Anaerobic training and that your heart works as hard as it would if you did cardio work

Be careful boeta

It's like having an injury, if you do not wait till it is cured it will take longer than usual to heal and you will sit with side effects! Take two weeks of rest then you will be fine.

When I get sick I stop all riding until I know I am at least 95% well.

I got sick 2 weeks before Magalies Monster and didn't ride for 10 days, I had hectic flu and a bad sinus infection. Antibiotics were necessary and were taken. I had a strong ride at Monster and all was good.
