Can we all please agree that suggesting M&B, Vida, Seattle are akin to suggesting Spur as a quality restaurant?

It's like that dude who came down to the Cape last year for his anniversary and wanted advice on where to get the best steak. All fine, except he wasn't interested in any of the so-called "cuisine" recommendations with "not enough food on the plate" and settled for something like Cattle Baron.

I went to school in Pretoria (worthy of mocking) and have Facebook friends who still live there. They vacation in Cape Town and then eat at places like Ocean Basket while down here.

What's with the Gautengers and their love of franchise/chain joints?

Agneefok! Can't with that! My Fiance and I have a rule. No Franchises. We do break it from time to time at Bootleggers in Camps. But that's out of desperation.

I reckon if you ate out once a week you could spend a year JUST doing Kloof street.

My wife's uncle is the same. They come down from P-Town, asks for a coffee shop and restaurant recommendation in every little nook and cranny, and then they end up going to cappucinos and ocean basket. "because they offer good value for money." true story. Apparently value is directly correlated to the size of the serving, and not the quality thereof.

I will however concede that other  P-Town people differ. Wifey's dad and our friends from varsity know all the hidden gems in P-town and even here on  our side of the pretty mountains.

You don't get a better steak than Vagabond's imho. Served with mash and gravy. It is a real treat and worth every penny spent. Pictorial proof added just to make everyone hungry.32a3bdfb023ad9f0a0f9c8f87e77ef57.jpg

Makes me think of the steak, egg and rosti that you can order from Hayways. Now I'm getting hungry for some steak.

Starbucks is not coffee.............

I tried the starbucks at eastgate in December. I am no barista but my cappachino was flipping hot, IMHO too hot. I had to wait like 10 min before drinking it. When I make at home I can drink it straight out the machine and it's no where near as hot as I had from starbucks. The free wi-fi was lekker though, made the 10 min waiting for the coffee to cool down go by quickly.

We have all listed our favourites, but what makes an ideal cycling coffee shop?

I will start about what I look for in a (hypothetical) cycling coffee shop:

It must be open and ready for business at 05h45. Enough staff to meet a rush, and machines up to pressure;

It must have an excellent barista who understands grinds, tamping and brewing. They must use excellent and freshly roasted beans AND good quality water. In short, the espresso must be top notch;

It should have a bike-rack outside with space to handle all comers;

It should have sufficient sitting space. Tables and counters with more chairs than the tables demand. We want to sit 5 or 6 at a 4 seater table without having to beg chairs from adjoining tables;

Seating should be available both outside - sunny in the early morning and shady thereafter and inside - warm (not hot) in winter and cool but not cold in summer;

It must serve a good breakfast from 07h00 onwards with a small menu offering variety. Porridge or muesli with fruit and real yogurt.  Eggs must be fresh,  bacon crispy, good bread for toast (which must be served hot and crisply toasted without being burnt). A good Eggs Benedict with spinach and a dollop of Hollandaise sauce. Pancakes or waffles and real Maple syrup. A bag of oranges and grapefruit so you can have freshly squeezed juice. Breakfast must be available all day;

Cakes must be professionally but not mass produced. The selection must go beyond Carrot cake and Cheesecake. Nice small biscuits to be available if you want a little snack.

Must have good beer on tap.

My favourites all have some, but none has all of the above.

What do you want ?
