I have noticed that whenever the subject of brakes comes up there are so many comments about riders that bleed their own brakes. Even having their own bleed kits and stuff ....

I have only needed to have brakes bled when having hose lengths changed, one time a frame with internal brake routing and that's it. Otherwise I have brakes I have been using for more 6 years and never needed bleeding.

Am I just lucky or what other circumstances may need brakes to be bled, besides something obvious like a damaged hose?

So, I would assume you refer to my post on the question about which brakes.

Yes, I do bleed my XT brakes. Once a year I replace the fluid. Just because I like to do so and that is how I maintain my equipment.

Also had them built over on to a frame with internal routing, which meant I had to cut the brake hose and bleed them.

That thread amongst others and had to have the internal routing done on the frame LittleBen bought from you ;)

I spent the whole afternoon trying to bleed my Avid BB7's, still won't come right. Any advice on which kit to use? (Apologies if this is off-topic)

edit: clarification

Bleeding cables is a complex procedure involving spanners, beer, cable cutters, unobtanium and a vacuum cleaner. Best left to a qualified mechanic to avoid intense frustration and / or personal injury.
