Why does it bother you guys if someone doesn't wear a helmet on a spruit amble?

Because I am selfish. I the helmetless one takes a tumble tumble and lies bleeding in the trial I have to go off-line to avoid him or even worse stop to see if i can help. I dont like blood from head wounds. Mud and dirt and blood is ok, but if you add hair it just becomes disgusting. So if he/she is totally bald and promises to fall next to the trial then it is all good.

NOBODY pays for the treatment of their own head injury - it is either the other members of your medical aid or the tax payer. Either way - wear a helmet or become more moronic at your own expense! I dont care about your style or individuality -if you cycle enough you will fall. If it too much hassle to wear a helmet, take up TV games.

Huh? You're concerned about the burden on medical aids and taxpayers? Maybe take up power walking, less chance of you inconveniencing your fellow citizens by breaking your arm on your bike. I seriously can't see why this bugs other people, I need to hear a better argument than that. Look, if you're going to pin it through Delta and jump the table top, etc, without a helmet then I get your point. If you're taking a casual Sunday ride then I don't see what the problem is.

You can crack your noodle on a Sunday morning casual ride as well.

Not long back I saw a father (for want of a better word) take his four kids, age at a guess between six and ten, up into Tokai. All on expensive looking bikes and not one of them wearing a helmet.

I thought they were maybe just going to ride up a little bit of the jeep track but later on spotted them bouncing down some of the single track.

Its one thing being a risk to your own safety but your kids?

There is a non negotiable rule in our house. You do not leave this yard on your bike without your lid on. NOT NEGOTIABLE.

Do you wear a seatbelt when driving? What you call a casual ride may be me pinning it - I could ride into you. I am also worried about the people having to care for you when you get a head injury. Clearly this argument is intended at those "clever" "hippie types" that feel their sense of "freedom" and "choice" is more important than taking sensable precautions. If that doesnt help just take the easy angle: those are the rules. I have seen and treated more people injured by accident than you have dreamt about - not ONE of them planned on getting injured. I don't know why you have to get into ad hominem attacks on the type of people that don't wear helmets. Perhaps you could try offer a more persuasive argument rather than insulting people that have a differing view. You may have treated lots of injured people, how many of them were cyclists not wearing helmets? Your evidence there is anecdotal at best anyway. As for seatbelts, different issue, seatbelt safety has no correlation with helmets so I'm not sure why you're bringing it up. Anyway, seatbelts have been proven to save lives and wearing them is enforced by law. I'd like to believe that we're not yet a nanny state and that wearing a helmet is at my discretion (when not a condition of using the park) based on the type of riding I'm planning to do. Like one poster said earlier, a friend of his didn't wear a helmet and stopped riding because of the abuse he received. That correlates with evidence that has shown enforced helmet use has led to a reduction in cyclists and has had no effect on the proportional number of injuries.

ATGATT

All The Gear All The Time.

You dress for the fall, not for the ride.

By all means go out for a casual ride without your lid. It doubles my pleasure when I get to say, "See, I told you..."

Crash Gordon + 1

In October 2004, the South African government passed a law making it compulsory for all bicyclists to wear helmets. The regulation requires the use of a protective helmet that is properly fastened and fitted while riding a bicycle or being carried as a passenger.

Modderfontein Reserve Rules:

The usual rules with regard to cycling are mandatory, mainly being that "no helmet, no ride" applies. A full copy of the rules and regulations are posted at the beginning of the trails, please take the time to read and acknowledge same. You need to have your own bicycle and cycling gear. Please stay on the designated paths within the reserve and remember to look out for walkers and wildlife.
