blah, blah, blah.

because it's law.

The Road Ordinance Act of 1977

It's not an effective law for road riding ie not enforcable; and wouldn't apply to anything off-road by definition.

Ill post my my same old same old answer for this situation

2$ helmet for a 2$ head

SO NO HELMET, I GUESS THERE IS NOTHING WORTH PROTECTING!!!!!

My ex storemans nephew died I think he was 4 or 5 , new bike no helmet rolling along at walking pace rolled into a wall, very sad he wasn't given a helmet with the bike.

Low speed impacts can kill, why grown men and woman think they ROCK PROOF is beyond me.

Runners frequently break 10kph, I think they should wear helmets as well. Also, the risk of drowning in swimming is extremely high, far higher than when not swimming, I propose mandatory waterwings for all swimmers. The reduction in comfort or function shouldn't overrule the need for safety.

Reasons for not wearing a helmet:

It has not been proven to be of benefit: try to set up a double blind prospective randomised study with a matched control group to prove that it DOESN'T. For one it will be hard to match the commonsense prevalent in the control group - encouraging somebody to bang their head hard without a helmet will be difficult.

It takes away my freedom: refer to multiple similar arguments - Some people need to be protected from themselves.

It messes up my hair: ?!

It is too heavy: HTFU

It is too much trouble

etc. etc.

It IS law- both cycling law and road law.

Trying to be diferent must be tedious.

Since you are throwing in very basic Latin: the point of the seatbelt question is that either you have total disregard for your own wellbeing or you choose the instances where you take basic precautions.

While I fully see the OP's view, hey, it's your head! Given that, if it's at a formal cycling area ( MTB Park, etc) USE your head and obey the rules.

Mate of mine, one of the bulletproof ones who ride every 9 months or so, took a tumble last year riding with me, I was 15m or so ahead of him in a technicalish section, and I hear the fall, and Crack!, his helmet breaking. Head was ok, or else it was hospital.

I Worry about his mental state still!!!

Oh and then it will be on Carte Blanche, The dangerous sport taking over SA!!! Mountain Biker kills himself!!!! No Helmet!!!!

Also , remember in UK and Europe it is no obligitary to wear a helmet. Be it on you your own head!!!....Use It

So this morning a Tonsil decides to MTB at Modderfontein without a Helmet.

After the guy parked next to me yelled at him "Helmet" We all just got dirty looks and off he went.

All we need is for him to smack his head or worse and there goes our modderfontein riding venue......

WEAR A HELMET TONSIL!!!!\

Rant over...

Otherwise I Had a nice ride at Modders this morning.......

What do the Modderfontein rules say about wearing a helmet when cycling there?

I'm guessing from the OP's post that there is a concern that cyclists breaking the existing Modderfontein rules will have all cyclists banned from the place. Hence my question.

Naturally the same would apply to motorists speeding ( but not in our lifetimes)

I'm not sure the question is whether or not we should wear helmets, that is another story.......

It's kind of my point, though. I can think of only a handful of occasions where I haven't worn a helmet, I'm not advocating not using a helmet, I'm just arguing that if it's in a park that doesn't stipulate it, that you know what you're doing and you're riding completely casually then why should other people be so put out that they have to yell 'HELMET' at you. I think that's a bit of a tonsil move.

What ticks me off is that at the end of the day he could mess it up for everybody else.

Image the The headlines in the papers, they will have a field day with it.

and then the Trails get Closed and thats that.

Yes the Reserve has the "No Helmet, No Ride" Rule.

I will concede that it is your choice. I have a problem with advocating it, especially if it speaks to the "coolness" of it. If you have never ridden off without putting your helmet on (by accident), it will still happen. The other bikers may have just been trying to help in case you forgot. You were the one without the helmet - calling the cyclists with helmets tonsils is very uncool.

I say.. Natural selection, let others do what they please, they are not interfering or hampering other people in any way.

I agree, NATURAL SELECTION ,,but none of my mates or there kids will ride with our mates without a helmet, we once drove to fungaalens and my rocket scientist mate checked NO HELMET, he decided " ok we will ride slow" we decided he will borrow one of ERIC'S disgusting dirty LOST AND FOUND helmets or he is not riding,simple...

I think he is still checking for lice

Clearly rules only apply to the uncool masses. Those great thinkers that have come to deeper insights dont need them. Lucky few!

I still can't understand how people think a layer of protection is not at all better than nothing. Seriously, even if it was to avoid road rash, helmets are worth it. And especially mtb, with all those pointy hard rocks to fall on, I would take any protection offered over nothing.

I also find I'm more likely to fall and hurt myself at low speed, versus at high speed. Things become more of an obstacle at lower speeds.

And I think we should all be shouting HELMET, if we don't we're saying it's ok.

Also try shouting **** and they'll maybe get the point.

Because when you hoot at someone, they immediately think "Oh, damn, my bad, I really should drive a lot better, thanks buddy!". The natural human reaction is to become obnoxious and you're going to get the same result from yelling at people with no helmet. You're really only venting your own frustration, not trying to improve the situation.
