7:24 - missed my target but was very nervous after last years hiding. Started too slow and never got it back despite going balls to the wall from 80km to the end. Perfect weather, great organisation and I prefer the new start. Saw you at the start but I was already in the chute. Well done on your ride

Were you riding in Qheubeka kit on a Swift hardtail?

Yes, those cramps I had on the climb after WP 4 went away and started to ride strong again, but only for a few km's then my RD cable snapped, so I missioned home with two gears.

Bummer man, I was admiring the bike!

how did it go with the guys riding the Avalanche single speed bikes

The guy who won that "ss Avalanche division" finished a minute behind me. We rode quite a bit together but he pulled away from me on the flats and downhills as he was running a 40x18 . Where I managed to beat him was on the uphills where he just couldn't pedal such big a gear.

Atta number 4 done, 7:30. With my pedal coming off the spinal in the last 20km so it was a single leg strategy to limp home.

That's the third Shimano XtR pedals that have broken like that. 1 per year. Wtf

XTR are very bad pedals. Went over to TIME and what a blast. Also had 4 sets of XTR's, crap!

Second Atta with month training, 10min slower than last year, 6:46 with my back shock failing at Atta Drop going down!

Wasn't in the mood at first when entries opened to drive 1150 km to Oudtshoorn and then back, but couldn't resist the temptation when one of my friends convinced me to go with them and got a last minute entry on Thursday. Didn't think I would finish the race with the amount of training I have done.

I took it super easy towards the Spur wp, perhaps too easy, but enjoyed the experience and just taking in the beauty of what you are surrounded with. That 1st climb just after where the 1st wp used to be is always something to remember, especially if you make it all the way to the top and people walking have the courtesy not to get in your way if they are walking. Rode my steel Niner MCR with Niner carbon rigid fork and X0 1(34t) x 11 gearing, super impressed with it, my arms got a hammering though going down that steepish section over the "grassbolle", I think it was after the 2nd last wp. That last 5 or 10 km is like a steam train hitting the finish.

The Attakwas is still my favorite one day event. I have some training to do, but most of all I have some pounds to loose if I want to finish in under 8 hours next year.

i don't know how you rigid fork lot did it. i ride an epic and my arms were really hurting on that final descent to the finish where it was so bumpy.

On that second last bend to the right with all those corrugations, my fillings almost rattled loose. I had to slow right down to keep my grip on the bars. :)

I see there are some lekker pics of the top riders pushing their bikes up the hills. it shows they are human, and that we are not alone, at some point everybody is gana hike a bike :whistling:

That, and the rocky sections were where my 150mm of butter smooth travel really gave me an advantage. BUT I had to pedal that piece of metal uphill as well. Haha.

Congrats on your ride on SS rigid. I have done many races on SSR but not sure if I will take on this one on a SS. RESPECT.

Broken ankle played up and the congestion was horrible. Forced to walk really easy climbs, really slow through a lot of sections and why oh why is everybody afraid to ride through river crossings? If you slow down they become harder!

Unlike Milky I didnt walk down any of the descents with the rigid fork but saw a lot of folk who did. The section where the pipe crosses the road and then drops off to the newly placed big rocks was a bit hairy though!

Really slow time considering I rode the Bit from Spur stop to end in 2:45.. Tuckd my arms in, hands inside my brakes on the bar and spun away with a cadence of about 5 gazillion running 34 - 20 on a 650b.

But as with every year, I really enjoyed the race. The mission, the fun, the dust, the swim in the river afterwards, the trip up and the sleepy ride home..... This is a must do on my calendar every year.

The ankle isnt loving me but the endorfins and the smile say thank you guys for an awesome time out there.

Dude were you riding with the waaaaaaaaaay wide bars. I think we yo yoed all the way there. I was the fattie in the canary yellow Time Freight Kit.

U passed me on the last climb and we had a quick chat at the finish, I ended up with a 6:23 and 71st overall. The last 2 climbs killed me, had nothing left to give and was bordering on cramping all the way home. Cant wait for next year!

belief it or not you are going to have to refresh my memory, as everything was a blur.

Were you running a 1x10 setup, 32T chainring Or did you have a black specialized jersey on?

My bars are awesome!!!

So awesome to ride with you man. Smiles and a laugh the whole ay except for the dude who shouted 'move you bike!' after I went over the bars and bounced down the smothery back side of the Atta top! What a douche!

Really good day out. Im still limping and my Bio is going to kill me but I would happily substitute 2 weeks for the vibe.
