matter of time, if you are turning right back into the tunnel from your ride, going from daylight to the darkness of the tunnel makes 100% visibility a bit of an issue - even if it is for a very brief period. Wonder if there is perhaps not another way to either leave the car park area or return back to the car park area - meaning that there is different points for starting and returning a ride?

I don't see why they need different starting and ending points. Quite simple really.............Keep left and use common sense and exercise caution. Not necessary to go flying through there unless its a race, in which case everybody is going in the same direction.

very true, and I totally agree with you - keep left and use common sense. Sadly, common sense is not always common practice, and whether we wlike it or not, sadly there are a few MTBers out there that think the trails they are riding on belong to them. So ja, prevention is better than cure - merely a suggestion.

Mmmmm Thats a bit harsh ? I am sure we all know that corner very well and it is nice to cut across and take it at speed . There are a few other intersections at NF where the same could have happened .

Hmm - the lady I saw was a considerable distance from the tunnel - are you sure this is the same incident. Or the head on happened on the road rather than in the tunnel.

 

I also thought it looked like a stroke. But good that it wasnt

 

If she did have a head on in the tunnel she managed to ride about a km down the road before falling off.

So ja, prevention is better than cure - merely a suggestion.

I was actually in the tunnel on the LHS when some guy had his kid on a small bike in the middle. I wasn't moving fast but I luckily saw him ahead of time as the kid was weaving in and out of puddles. Even moving slowly it would have been an issue.

 

The light/dark scenario is an issue. My eyes take time and I am always paranoid on this piece of the ride. I think its just a matter of time before a big accident happens on a trail like this or Spruit. Someone is going to get seriously hurt when heads clash in a fast head on.

 

FWIW: I suggest some big signs saying neutral zone until the other side of the tunnel and agreed that the trails markings should move so that they start on the other side of the tunnel, so the Stravaholes will only commence racing on the other side.

You talking about the biggish group in ABSA branded kit? Rode past that, someone was lying on the floor, not sure what happened.

I also saw that one and was wondering what happened. It was a bit far from the tunnel to have occurred there. We passed there and saw two ambulances and a bike on the ground between the two. Think whoever the patient was might've already have been loaded into an ambulance.

You could use Strava segments to see who the raceholes are......

Dangerous segments can also be flagged and removed. If there is not a segment to KOM, you will reduce racing immediately.

Eish. Hope she is okay. Does Strava segments override the need to cool down for the last 10 minutes of a ride these day?

Ditto, I reckon she was at least 1km from the tunnel on the long dirt road leading back to the start/finish. There were a whole lot of people around her so I did not stop. Timing sounds about right and I saw the ambulance leave the parking lot towards the tunnel a few minutes after I got back. Anyway, not saying some Wally did not ride into her, just that she rode some way before stopping.
