Where is the biggest, meanest, longest and steepest hill in Jo'berg?

You need to make it on the short side , the more people can see the more u will get support . Watching a slow ass dude up a long hill is boring .

I think the super steep short explosive stuff will draw a crowd, it will also give u a wider field of participants .

Something wrong with that chart... Alp de Heuz is not 152km of riding... not even close...

Saw yes. But I did not get that info first hand......so not sure (Promised myself to one day go get that data on my own! hahahah) Maar nou ja.

Updated the chart with one less zero....more plausible? I think....

Pretty much what I said earlier...

Why not make it more like the Red Bull Hill Chasers.

  • Steep hill
  • Relatively short (so it's a sprint race)
  • Various disciplines enter (from BMX to Roadies)
  • Great for spectators

Thanks for all the suggestions - now to take a recce drive out to the areas and have a look at the short steep crowd satisfying hill that will serve this purpose.

There are no long climbs in JHB, so any and all suggestions should be fine. It's just a route you need.

Well - I have Tourmalet at 21km and AdeH at 13.7 (from memory) - but I don't know that those are off the official start points for the climbs - just my own computer... so about 4 zero's too many on your chart. The climbs look about right, although Long Tom from Sabi side is misleading on the average gradient score because of the plateau at the top - in any case it feels about the same as Toumalet when you ride it - and going from Lydenburg side, the first section is ugly.

Of course - Robbers pass from Pilgrims Rest side is interesting too... and going down that side in the mist on a wet road nearly caused some flying lessons...

In the dry, you'll never forget the smell of burning brake pads.

How about those hills when you come out of Silverstar Casino opposite the Sasol on the N14 in Krugersdorp?

Hectic climbs, just when you think you're done, another steep climb comes up!

We call it Hill Snacks!

Linksfield Ridge by King David School. A nice 1 km climb to the top with a 10% gradient. It is a boomed off area so you can easily do repeats.

Just brake less... :) Never worried about it in the dry - but now there is the added hassle of a million potholes and gravel on the tar to avoid... and for sure they could catch you by surprise in a few corners... bring on disk brake road bikes....

Team mate once learnt to respect those 40km/h hairpin bend signs. I didn't follow him down any other decents.

Indeed they are worthy of a certain amount or respect..... and a level of caution... even in the dry...

There is also the climb up from the sewage works in Krugersdorp - several car clubs use this for their hill climb events as there is almost NO traffic and there are plenty of rocks for spectators to sit on and watch the action

I ride this regularly from work, personally I think it's tough set f hills. Starts from C/r Chester and Emmarentia road in Greenside and ends in Auckland Park at the top of Sentech Tower.

Nothing Beats the "Hell Hill" on the Kaftan Mountain on the Mozambiquen Border. I tried several times to ride it out. You even struggle to walk it out.
