Even with an army of test bikes, the Borealis Echo was a tough bike to track down at the Sea Otter Classic. When it wasn’t being back flipped by Gregory Robinson-Krunrod, or given to trials exhibition riders, Echos could be spotted tearing around the venue by a number of fat bike suspension curious folk.

In spite of it’s popularity, we managed to track one down to get it on the scale…

Anyone worried about the durability or versatility of the Echo needn’t worry. These bikes were absolutely hammered at the SOC and were no worse for the wear at the end of the show. We can’t guarantee that many will be back flipped or spun, but it is possible…

This medium framed Echo tipped the scale at an impressive 27.07 lbs or 12.28kg. That weight is for a SRAM X01 build with X9 aluminum crank and WTC direct mount chainring, Borealis Carbondale rims running Surly Bud and Lou 4.8″ tires set up tubeless, and a modest aluminum cockpit with an Ergon SME3 saddle. Certainly not a cheap build by any means, but also not the top of the line. Pretty impressive for a bike with nearly 5″ wide tires and a suspension fork.

Stay tuned for our first impressions of the Echo and the Bluto soon!

Now that's a Fat Bike - not some main stream branded bike trying to cash in on the next trend... Nice!

Not nice, need to get close to the water or pick a line where the sand was not disturbed by cars recently, other than that awesome to ride along the beach

Can someone please explain the point of a fat bike to me?

To look cool, be different or perhaps a softer ride.

Personally I am gravitating more to the 29'er plus concept and only then on a full rigid bike.

But the real purpose was always for Iditarod.

Hi. I want to built a fatbike... what would you suggest? Carbon fork or air suspension fork?

There is no real point, or justification in buying a Fat Bike here in SA. It is about what makes you feel good. Think about the car enthusiast that buys an old car, does it up and takes it out on weekends to show it off. A fatty. great to bang around on and possibly even challenge yourself in a local race. Its just nice to have. I NEED one!

I also ride my bikes for fun but they also have a purpose. ie road bike for road riding. Hard tail for XCO and Dual for marathons. Was just wondering if there is a specific purpose for a fat bike. Was answered by the Sheriff. Thanks

I like. Only concern is you'll need a diving cylinder on your back if you plan on doing an event on it.
