I think Rabon did very good.

I don't think anybody can say Rabon cost Sauser the race. I think Sauser's team wanted to push the envelope on getting the lightest bike, and got burned. Sometimes the only way we learn is through making mistakes. I bet you next year they will focus more on reliability than weight.

Yeah Maybe oneday when he writes an autobiography called "Life as the super domestique" we'l get the uncensored version of partnering with Sauser....

what an interesting read that will be.

Strange question for those that have done the EPIC...

The pro's have spares and the like at the waterpoints/tech zones that they may use on their bikes if the need arises. These range from wheels, brake pads to even a seat post with saddle as seen in one of the DSTV highlights programs where the ladies were looking for a spare rear shock.

What do the average joe's do if they need these sort of spares?

Is it tickets for them if they cant get hold of this type of stuff or is there some sort of mini tech shop at the waterpoints that they may call on to purchase stuff ?

On that note, the pro's who enter the Epic are sponsored, whereas the average joe has to pay his own way for an entrance to the event.....surely its just as important that the average joe gets the opportunity to finish the race and not have to pull out do to these sort of mechanicals.

Some dude crashed his rear wheel and bought one at the sram tech zone water point for 6k. Apparently the same wheel sells for not more than 3k locally. Kinda like take it or leave it....dont take it and you out of the race.

I paid $500 for a X0 RD at BC Bike Race in June. I was very grateful that the expertise was on hand to fix my bike up after 25 km single speeding it. I probably would have paid $750 to have a tech zone at the water point that supported my choice of equipment.

I would rather single speed it than pay that R5000+. :whistling:

Yeah. I would love to read that book. Wonder if they will partner for next year again. I reckon he has a bright mtb future

Isn't that something we've been saying every year? I just get this strange feeling of deja vu...

Spoke to a buddy of mine that finished the epic in 2013 and 2014... they improved their finishing time by 3Hours. Apparently it was quite a bit "easier" (or less hell) that last year...

Still you must be a beast to ride that!

in the words of Gary player, "the more i practice the luckier i get"

maybe after 2013 they knew how to prepare better for the 2014 race.

If you climbed 15000meter in 8 days in mud rain heat and cold slept in a wet tent in a wet sleeping bag I think you can talk but if you did not ever even tried it please shut up. I got the t-shirt and proud of it 2014 was my first

Pieterg, I'm with you on this one. That was one tough event. The days that were supposed to be slightly easier were not due to weather conditions - stage 2 rain, stage 3 wind. Hey, that's what makes it the Epic. Would not be worth all the time and money if it was easy. Well done on finishing!

Unfortunately it appears to be the sad nature of many people on this forum to undermine others achievements...
