I just love the GoPro's, 4 of my mates have them and the footage of me is awesome, especially once they have finished editing. Cheap as well since it costs me nothing.

Garmin virb elite is Awesome. Friend had a GoPro 3 black and sold his for the Virb Elite. Its everything you need in one device on your bike.

I have the whole GP setup. Bought it for Tour de Tuli. Never used it "in anger". Not worth it for me.

They do make a lot more sense on DH or AM bikes. I think people get bored of editing when it is hour after hour of the same boring track in front of them.

Waste of money, except if you're, as per Maxxis, on a DH or AM bike. Same on motorbikes. Nice toy, for the first 5 rides, then just too much work.

You need to plan GoPro rides like you plan a century or a big race. You need to come up with a story, scout, try some lines, scout again, then write a story line that may work. THEN you go and shoot, set up different shots of the same scene, go ride it over and over and over (or get your mates / subject to do it) and then go edit it. Going from 2 hours of raw/unplanned GoPro footage to something you'd actually watch is not likely to happen. Unless you get a Buck Norris moment, which if you think about it, was 30 seconds of 2 hour's footage ....

Sure, strap you GoPro on every ride, and afterwards download to your computer, view it, and in my opinion, if there's no interesting bits, discard it. If there's interesting bits, make a 'wide cut' of it and store it for future use. That way, you can build up a library of interesting Groenkloof footage, for example. In a year's time, you may even have enough to make a 'sick edit' :D

Good post Riaan.

it is time consuming, and if you nail the shot, very satisfying.

Doing something like you said can make one's boring same-old track into quite a fun-filled ride.

The GoPro marketing is excellent tho, going by the responsed on this thread and some others how many peeps went out and bought one, and turned out it was not really as awesome as the promo videos in the shop fo them.

As per Maxxis. Only record fun bits of downhill trail, jumps etc. I stop the recording so try not to get any junk footage of riding/pushing back up. Friend of mine does editing...

I like to use mine mainly while pushing my bike up hills, sometimes I ride as well but not very often.

When I accidentally switched the setting to take pics every second I got lots of Sidewinder pushing up technical bits at The Farm.

I have used it for social riding on holiday .Slow riding with little dust around seems to work .As soon as there is dust and the sun is low ,you can hardly make out anything .Cellphone photo still better .To answer your Q .No !it was not worth it !

Seems like the majority of the people say it is a waste. I have to say when you see some of the DH runs on go pro when they are in the shade you can not make out is they are on the rocks, in the trees it is just very dark. Saw some footage from PMB.
