been having some major issues with my vertical garden. First had to put some shadecloth up as the sun was just killing my lettuce - now the ants have got to my rocket and coriander....ant traps been set and they seem to be slowly dispersing. Now need to try and recover them.

My tomatoes not doing to great - I have one tomato, but the plant looks like it is dying. Going to try and replant some more to see if it was the combination of the ants and sun...also going to plant some beans in that space as a trial

the whole thing is an experiment...but I was hoping for more success...hopefully now I have got rid of the pests it will be more fruitful

Seriously, monkeys are impossible, they will rip out every plant and just nibble each one! plastic snakes dont work, tried that when we lived in pmb. They will even tear your shadecloth if you build a green house.....maybe try an aviary-like structure with chicken wire. Option B is grow lights in your garage!

Eish... cage building... one of the many things i am not good at...

I hear you, last year my brinjals suffered so badly with red spidermite I eventually pulled the whole lot out. The trick is not to give up....maybe give replanting tomatoes a miss, they are warm weather crops and its now at the end of their season.... ^_^

First thing... which veggies will monkeys not eat? We have millions of the buggers around... and I dont want to go on planting and they chow everything!

Beetroot? Spinach?

The only thing that will work against them is a rifle and a scope.

thanks for the advice - have two plants growing in a standard bed...so I will see what they can reap - they have some flowers ready to fruit anyway.

I also have an old tyre under the house that I am going to use to try grow some potatoes

Looking at the pics of latent's homestead, he'd need quite a pack though.

Thats the problem... in the time it takes my buksie to run down they just jump on the fence and look at him

Hi there. I was wondering about this "planting according to the phase of the moon" thing. A few people (including a farmer) has mentioned it to me in the past and I have also read about it in vegetable gardening books. Basically you must plant during the waxing phase of the moon and definitely no planting during the last quarter etc etc. Anybody following this advice and do you actually found that it makes a difference?
