how can i stop birds from eating my spinach in an eco friendly manner ? i tried rubber snakes and CDs and it doesn't seem to deter them from eating my spinach.

A netting cover if you have the bucks or spanning a rope/yarn trellis over that patch...they should not be able to land on it or near it...cheap sisal string should be sufficient...

Check this link for what I refer to

what cd's were they?..they need to be bad...steve hofmeyer works quite well...but if you can get a copy of bono-solo that is the best...chases all critters away...in fact you may even have difficulty going near yourself

I wouldn't go any more than Celine Dion. Enough to keep the birds away and just not strong enough so that you can't do maintenance on the garden. Just be careful of being in the garden too long..... You don't want to tempt fate. Results could be disastrous!

Sorry, but seriously the cd thing doesnt work, ive just given a friend some grow tunnel hoops to cover her veggie garden, after the birds shredded her veg AGAIN despite the cd's. Strange, they wrecked all the brassicas but did not touch the lettuce

I used from those small mirror balls that u can buy at a craft or chinese shop. The seem to work but they dont last long before the little mirrors start falling off

scarecrows

Is that between Stellenbosch and Somerset West?

There used to be a farm there that got quite famous for their scarecrows. I remember once seeing scarecrow Western Province and a Blue Bulls rugby teams "playing" in their fields. Cool stuff!

Many years ago I used a plastic netting I bought from a nursery to keep birds from my strawberries. Killed a few Bulbuls before I got to watering the plants, do not use netting that could catch birds feet. Best would be firm chicken wire.

You guys got me so worked up I have ordered my seeds now and can not wait for it to arrive with some warmer weather.

I problem is that my wife now decided that she wants some laying hens. How will this affect my, yet to be planted vegetable garden. Or should I just fence and cover the whole veg patch? Or the chickens.

Off topic.

What type of chicken should I look to get for egg producing? They will NOT be slaughtered. So eggs are the only concern.
