Vegetable gardens at home.

Hi there. I was wondering about this "planting according to the phase of the moon" thing. A few people (including a farmer) has mentioned it to me in the past and I have also read about it in vegetable gardening books. Basically you must plant during the waxing phase of the moon and definitely no planting during the last quarter etc etc. Anybody following this advice and do you actually found that it makes a difference?

some people swear by it, there is a detailed day to day lunar calendar in the Gardener magazine.... when to plant, prune, mow....etc. Ive never done it, I do what I do when I have a chance, too busy :)

Quite a few bugs (like cutworms and certain aphids) are night dwellers, and are more active if there's more light at night. Thus, small plants during full moon = better chance of getting damage.

Mixed lettuce, mangetout and "bright lights" spinach. I grow them on this stand otherwise the chooks will shred the lot.

The white plastic is a 2l milk bottle used as a funnel to water into the resevoir at the bottom of the pot. Only need to water once a week.

Dinosaur gourds\calabash, bought the seed online from England.

Are those gourds edible, or purely decorative?

Earlier today I went to my local nursery, Starke Aires in Mowbray, to buy a few bits and bobs. My 13 year old went along and got a great surprize for his troubles. The owner, I think, was giving away vegetable, herb and flower seeds to children that came into the place. He explained that so few city kids have even the faintest ides that things can grow from seed, that he decided to do something about it. He explained how to plant the seeds, water them and all he asked was that they send him a picture in a few weeks time. He got a packet of mixed herbs as well as some cherry tomato seeds. I thought it was a bloody great marketing as well as an educational idea. He knew I'd have to buy 2 extra pots and potting soil, but I did it with a big smile. More businesses should be like that. Bike shops are you reading this? :)

instead of seeds bike shops can give away a nice specialised with campaq parts. So few of us know the feel of good components. I promise I'll buy a water bottle cage and water bottle to go with it and I'll smile while buying it.

I am having lots of problems with snails insects and worms eating at my crop particularly the brinjal and peppers. So Yesterday I bought some pekin bantams to assist in regulating these buggers

You can also try chopping up and boiling some chillis in a bit of liquid. Let the liquid cool, add a tiny bit of dishwash liquid and spray the plants and around their stem.
