It is time to plant and the seeds are ready and available for the big Pumpkin competition.

We would like to improve on the 2015 weight of 328kg. For the winner there is a big financial prize and more prizes for the categories like the most beautiful, ugliest or original pumpkin.

The overall National winner gets announced at TAU SA Congress in September where he/she will receive a trophy. Every year hundreds of kilograms of pumpkin are donated to Welfare organisations that distribute the pumpkin to needy people and communities in and around Pretoria.

This is a nice family outing for all.

Hi people. I have a ton of tomotoes. 3 different types. But it is kind of tasteless..... any tips.

Stagger the planting!

Seriously though, I have red thumbs, so I have a gardener that does my vegie garden, he lives on the property, so eats from the garden also.

But went a couple of seasons where I'd have tons of tomatoes and lettuce and whatever else, until I managed to persuade him to stagger the sowing over a month or more!!!

Used to give away bags of stuff

Some seeds are starting to germinate in the grow bed. I have 45 red mozambican tilapia in the bottom. A 40w solar panel is conected straight to a little solar bilge pump. So it only runs when the sun is out. I had to put a tap on the pipe from the pump to the grow bed as it was pumping water in faster than it was flushing. I have it dialed now tho.

Lovely set-up Pieter. Will you add a battery for back up in the future?

Question: There is enough space in there for a few barbel, have you thought of adding a few fingerlings once the tillapia are bigger? Barbel have a massive growth rate in a controlled environment like that, so you could harvest barbel at 8-900g in short period, well before the tillapia reach 400g

Thanks man. No I am not planing on adding a battery, I want to keep it as simple and cheap as possible. I really want some Clarens Catfish. My friend in Nigeria uses them and they grow super fast. Problem is getting them in SA.

You'll be surprised at the local variety. It's indigenous, hardy and if my memory serves me correct have a feed conversion rate of 1:0.7 or better, but lets not quote me on that.

Their disease tolerance is magnificent and adapt to water quality "like a fish in water".
