I think the problem with IDTs is that guys have this idyllic image in their minds of them merrily churning away on the IDT, watching movies.

They think:

  • I could easily cycle for an hour instead of lying in front of the TV!
  • It's perfect! I can spend some time by myself and really get some training in!
  • I'll get so much stronger, I'll bury everyone on Saturday.
  • This is going to be fun!

What really happens:

  • It hurts. Because you're not doing downhills and freeing a bit of the way, you're hurting a lot by the end of an hour.
  • You sweat. A lot. No, no, more than that. Your entire garage/living room/bedroom looks like you've turned on the sprinkler and left it on for a few hours. You invest in 10 industrial size fans and 2 aircons but that only seems to blow the sweat against the roof as well.
  • It's boring. Instead of focusing on the movie/series/music, all you can think about is how long you've got left until you finish. Look at watch: 0:12:44. Look at watch after a long time: 0:12:47, etc., etc.
  • Results don't come quickly. You only really see results after a month or two. Most guys expect results immediately. Ain't gonna happen.
  • It's lonely. Even if you're alone on the road you get to shout at an occasional taxi or nod your head at a passing cyclist. Here it's just you and the monotony of the cranks turning over and over. It's kind of like solitary confinement in prison.

They also imagine their "pain cave" would look something like this:

Instead, it ends up looking like this:

I identify 100%. I also thought my IDT was a total waste of money and it spent a decade in the shed, never getting any use......that's until I broke my wrist and couldn't ride for 8 weeks. I hit the IDT with a vengeance and 8 weeks later rode a 3h45 Argus without 1 km of road training. Then the IDT went into retirement until a collarbone did the same thing. I trained on the IDT to keep my fitness levels up and had just 5 weeks on the mountain before W2W, and it went well. Now the IDT seems like a very good buy and it is waiting in the wings.......hopefully never to be used again!

Don't waste your time - the reason we bought that one, was because the Profile Design Tri one which attaches to the seat also broke......

If guys are struggling to find seat post bottle mounts that work... I got one from linden to replace the other piece of crap. Its plastic and cheap and works like a dream. I can look what brand it is when I get home.

Or in my case stay in D without slipping down further, I see it as a necessary evil for rainy and very cold and miserable days.

Those days, that's why you ride a dirt bike, with or without engine!

Worst Buy: Assos Gloves, only good for those stage races when gippo's arrives on day 3 and you're in the mountains.....

Best Buy: Shimano XT Brakes with ICE TEC rotors, peerless.

Only time I use the IDT is if i'm recovering from a visit to Casualty, which was quite a lot last year.

Actually bought it for my wife but shes maybe done 4 hours tops.

Bought rollers last week .Helps enormously with balance .I noticed that at berge dale the past weekend .Half an hour on them is hard work.Even my 8year old can ride on them with his mtb and has improved his balance immediately .Worst buy was first ascent baggies .I got rid of them
