So the steel spoke/alu nipple thing is not just an opinion or bad experience vibe.

It is a real scientific thing. There is a chemical reaction and oxidation occurs. This will seize the spokes in the nipples so you will find that you cant really true the wheel after a while and if failure or severe impact happens, the spokes either break off just above the nipple, the nipples sheer OR (the worst of the lot and it happens a lot on stans rims) the nipple is pulled through the rim.

Brass nipples all the way.

Alu may have cool colours and look bling but they are rubbish. Scientific fact, true story, the end!

Google aluminium nipples and ENVE wheels and see what nipple corrosion really is.

Which is why any wheelbuilder worth their salt uses an oil/loctite on the spoke threads before building up a wheel.

Even wheels with brass nipples are rendered *** useless if they're built by gorilla paws ....

Loctite? Are you sure?

If it was me, I would just suck it up and get 2 new Arch EX rims and get that rebuilt on your existing hubs. Try negotiating and see if they will cover some of the rebuild cost. Those Giant hoops suck big time and are heavy as hell. Had them and could not be happier upgrading to a set of Arch EX's. Always used to struggle with them and tubeless tires. Now I can seat a tire even, without sealant.

You need to distinguish between Giant PXC2 and PXCR1 wheelsets. The former weigh well over 2kgs and I agree they suck and are an essential upgrade on any bike fitted with them. The latter are scandium rims and weigh 1750g which is the same as a ZTR Arch and Hope hub setup. I run both wheelsets, the Giant's on my Anthem, and the ZTR's on my Ritchey and there is no discernable difference between them. The Giants have been through thousands of km's the past 12 months including 2013 Epic with no problems.

Cajees have so many Giants on the floor ,they should have an extra wheel .I have owned 3 Giants and have never had problems with wheels or anything else for that matter

Hence "oil/loctite" ... but yes, have had wheels done using either linseed oil or a light strength loctite (220 or something along those lines)

Some builders apparently even crimp the nipples ever so slightly.

The basic premise though is, a properly built and tensioned wheelset trumps just about any notion of of brands and materials thrown around.

Ah Sorry. My fault. Apologies. Have no experience with the new ones. Was looking for a set myself too at some stage and then just went the Stans way when they were not available. Anyway, good luck

Thanks, that clears it up. I have the crappy PXC2's on my bike.

I have the P-XCR1 rims on my Anthem, and they weigh waayyy less than 2kg for the set. I had the ZTR Crests before that and bent them quite often. My P-XCR1's are much stronger than my Crests were, and my Crests weighed more as well (I didn't have the best hubs on them).

So anyone that says they are heavy doesn't really know the P-XCR1 rim and wheels.

A linseed oil/sealant compound (not tire sealant or silicone based sealant) mix works well.

Loctite is probably not the way to go. Maybe but I have never used it nor had to. But that is not to say its wrong, just never really heard of it.

Gorilla paws? hahahahaha....

That's the one! :) ..... Yeah, also been weary of the loctite thing, but there are varying types and strengths. Had one wheelset built a while back and the guy used the stuff, lasted a good few years before being handed down.

Still prefer the linseed oil/sealant combo though, personally.
