Serious cyclists shouldn't smoke.

Kudos OP.

You say that and sorry for derailing the thread.

Did a road ride around the East Rand two weeks ago, decided to stop at the Mugg and Bean express on Atlas opposite Christian Family Church, and there was a guy and gal so proud of themselves and oblivious firstly to the smoking law and secondly how they were stinking the place up, all this in their lovely cycle gear and bikes parked next to them.

I can still taste some kotsch in my mouth.

Sorry, but I have not read all the comments so if I missed it, my apologies.

But why did he not run away and simply just stand there waiting for the cops ?

There were security guards and bystanders around him (it doesn't look like it in the pic) but they were standing close by ready to give chase if needed. But yeah, i was also wondering why they did not hold him and why he did not try make a run for it.

I am going to sound like a real negative twit, but here goes.

He will walk away, will tell the cops he was victimized and confused the bike with the wrong one, either a brothers, uncles or whatever.

The SAPS did not catch him with the goods in his possession, and will have a hard time trying to prove in court that he stole it or tried to steal it.

Evidence is what they need and sadly eyewitness reports is not evidence enough.

This country is stuffed, as he should have been in cuffs from the security guards side.

We are entitled as public to make a citizens arrest, but if we do, they can lay a case of assault, criminals have more rights than honest people.

We caught two guys in possession of stolen bikes and they simply walked away because they claimed they bought the bikes from someone else.

The cops apparently felt that "possession of stolen goods" was not enough to keep them behind bars.

In about 2 pages max, the racial profiling will show it's ugly head, get your answers in a row, HOW DARE U CALL HIM "a suspect looking cyclist " just cause he smokes, this smacks of something far more sinister, obviously I am kidding but the next TREE HUGGER won't be, well done AS I ALWAYS SAY TRUST YOUR GUT

IF HE LOOKS OUT OF PLACE, HIS ACTIONS ARE OUT OF PLACE, IF YOU GET A WARM FUZZY FEELING IN YOUR BIG TOE, FETCH!!!!!!!

Well done for putting him in his place(jail) even if it was for 5 min max

we are on page 3 already and my popcorn is getting cold...

HOWEVER.....

(Now I am going to sound like a flag waving patriotic optimist here and this is not aimed at you Sheriff ......)

Due to the actions of one person, another person's faith in human kind was restored a bit. If more people did what Firemeister did, regardless of whether the perp was arrested or not at the end of the day, this country would be a better place. EVERYBODY can make a difference, even if it is a little bit at a time.

It was the shoes that gave him away mate. Mountainbikers don't wear white shoes ^_^

Sherbert, I'm in trouble then, I wear white shoes and smoke  Please do not try take my bike away from me.

All said and done, well done for your part

So there I was, at the Argus expo on Saturday, on my way to register..

If it wasn't that I accidently tried to enter at the exit, my eye would not have caught this very suspect looking cyclist, smoking near some bikes outside the centre.

As he didn't notice I was watching him, I thought i'd give him a bit of time and rope to hang himself. He untied a bike (don't ask me how) and a few minutes later I apprehended him with a security guard, and managed get some unknown bloke's bike back for him before it was even properly stolen.

I had to leave to register, but returned later and was informed by security the owner was very grateful to hear his bike was with them.

If this is your bike, you owe me beer.

If you happen to know the guy in the pic with the black tshirt and shaved head, he is a bike thief.

The pics were taken after he got apprehended and held by security.

So you say he has been apprehended by the time u took the pics? Mmm interesting that he is being held by means of "sit boy", or " heal" because he does not seem to be under any form of captivity... Or is it just me? He is an honest thief because he did not make a run for it!

The guy certainly played it cool; maybe his experience tells him it"s not going to come to anything if he sits tight.

Well done for preventing the theft.

Well done Firemeister - I really admire your restraint. I would've been sitting behind bars right about now for 'racial attack' etc etc etc, would've moered him good and proper there and then.

after the last punch up with the police in Cape Town, maybe the guy was afraid to give the police an excuse to really mokker him.....

Exactly. Legging it would have just implicated him and probably resulted in a beating if he was caught. Hang around waiting, the cops finally arrive, act like you don't know what people are going on about, say some guy accused you of something, cop gets bored, realises this is just pointless paperwork, everyone stands around looking at each other for a few minutes and then lethargically disperse.

Dude knows our cops are disinterested in anything that doesn't allow them to truncheon someone in the nuts or extract a bribe.
