Mtb components, what's the difference?

Plenty of mtbers have big lovin for the newish shimano brakes. You'll have to qualify your disgust with a version /year model.

The 2013 ice tech ones, they used to lock-up, lose power and become spongy on long descends. Bled them at different shops 3 time to try and resolve issue, with no luck.

Had the old saints on my DH bike, which were proper, but now I only run Hope M4's.

As this is the internet, everyone can have their own opinion:)

OK hopes are definitely an upgrade to even working shimanos. You may just have gotten a dud set, it happens!

weight saving and some tech / functionality....that is really the diffs

I wouldn't buy a complete groupo, but rather cherry pick the best / crown jewels from each.

SLX brakes...no brainer

SLX cassette and chain, consumables

XTR shifters...buttery smooveness

SPD 540 pedals

SLX crank

XT derailleurs...shadow plus

But that is if it was my money

My best-value combo would be:

- SLX brakes

- SLX cassette

- SRAM PG1050 chain (it's shinier, hehe)

- X0 shifters (buttery smoove, AND very crisp/solid shifting action)

- SPD 540 pedals

- SLX cranks

- X9 type 2 derailleur

- Front derailleur - any model is fine

yip good combo as well...had XO before, couldn't fault it...prefer my XTR shifters even if its just a "shimano completeness" exercise. Won't touch SRAM cranks or brakes but their shifting is good

I have run A combination of LX and XT for years ...the LX was changed to SLX

I still prefer the XT over otheres brakes having run both the old (bullet proof) and the new Lighter version. My old XT set went with the bike when it was Stolen.

I have always run lx/slx cranks ,BB and front derailleur however I do prefer XT shifters ,chain, cluster and rear derailleur ...there is a definite difference in weight between the slx and Xt cluster.

While you looking at components I believe the most important ,are the hubs in the wheel set

If I buy a slx or a deore or a xt group set, what really is the difference? What benefit do you get for the extra cash?

About to upgrade my spark 950 components and looking at the prices it's from 3500 to 17500 for a group set.

And please if you can be specific, don't say speed or effort

Basically, the main difference is price and bragging rights.

Deore is usually Shimano's entry level components. But it doesn't mean because it's entry level it's no good. XT and XTR is Shimano's high end components. With the XT and XTR components they are usually a few grams lighter, looks a bit better / less plastic, and are supposed to be smoother. I've got a mix of SLX and XT on my bikes and I can't tell which are smoother, lighter etc, but I know the XT cost a lot more.

SLX is a safe bet and in many instances SLX is actually as good as XT or even better. For instance, the SLX crankset is highly rates, as are the brakes and gear components. I would personally not pay more for XT over SLX - if it comes on a new bike I wouldn't say no but I wouldn't pay more for it as there would be no benefit other than "badge appeal".

What would the implications be as to mixing Sram & Shimano components? I am slowly upgrading my bike and am not happy with the SRAM S800 tripple crank and thought one had to replace it with the same brand. Sorry if this is a noob question but thats how we learn ain't it?

No need to be sorry...valid question

Can't mix rear derailleurs and shifters, you have to choose one or the other, sram or shi...the rest...chains, cassettes, cranks(except their respective bb's and chainrings of course) can be a mixed bag.

Just replaced my XTR 975 brakes with SLX 675. What a difference! The SLX brakes are amazing!

important to qualify the opinion with a model number like has been done here.

Try Sram, currently using formula R1 brakes and Sram XX1, this combo cost about 17K but far better than XTR. Have used full shimano XT including brakes (very good), also use Sram XX.

the shifting is different on sram.

How good is the new Deore M615 parts? The brakes can also run ice-tek pads? And Shadow+ on the RD. Almost as big a price difference on the Brakes to SLX as SLX is to XT. I'm sure there is a weight difference between the big parts (Cassette/Cranks), but is it really worth it?

Personally I would have this Combo of Parts (mainly because of Budget):

M615 Brakes (About R800 cheaper than SLX, and for my riding it will probably work as well)

M610/M615 Crankset (About R500 Cheaper than SLX)

XT Shifters (with extra ispec covers, just because you cannot do bar-mount and ispec on other cheaper shifters)

SLX Shadow+ RD

M615/M675 FD (Deore/SLX FD prices very close)

SLX Casette (weight)

Not sure what chain lasts best, but I will take that one (probably not the lightest to start with but that should also save some bucks, not too concerned with the brand, but like KMC)

Biggest problem with groupsets (I think) is that they hardly ever include the cool stuff like ispec and shadow+.
