tombeej Posted October 7, 2014 Share For those who think the first climb is gentle and easy..... its not. Plan AGet hopelessly outclassed again in Batch A. Do a nice lung pukeing pace up to top of Fox hill, and still loose out 3 minutes to A batch leaders. Wait for the B batch lead bus to come past. Hook in and wheel suck as long as I can. Plan BPray Sounds a lot like my plan. Which might still be a little too ambitious considering my current form (and expanded waistline). Still, I'll enjoy the downhills more . Frosty Posted October 7, 2014 Share I've been dropped on Fox hill on all four occasions I've done the Shova. I'm one of those that takes about 15-20Km or 30 minutes to get warmed up. Trying to warm up before the start doesn't always work out, as it's not always possible to get into the start batch moments before starting, and you usually end up at the back of the group and have to burn a few matches to get to the front of the group in the first few Km. In all four occasions, I've managed to ride with a fair sized committed-to-work bunch right to the finish (my overall group position in brackets).2007 (AL) - 03:00:09 (53/173)2008 (VB 35-39) - 02:45:57 (34/146)2009 (VB 35-39) - 02:44:06 (28/154)2010 (TL) - 02:40:53 (11/96)For the serious guys, there's no need to panic if you've been dropped from a breakaway going up Fox Hill. Sit in and work with the next bunch and a good time is possible (considering a top position is out of the question). Chances are that the breakaway is a (very) small group compared to the next bunch. Falco Posted October 8, 2014 Share For those with a bit of local PMB knowledge, how safe is it to take a ride from the start up the first climb to the Thornville turnoff, and back to town, on Saturday? I'm talking about safety from the point of view of road conditions, width of yellow line area, local inhabitants etc. I want to do a slow leg loosener after driving from Jhb, but don't want to be flattened or mugged in the process. So so but with the way cars drive on that road I would not do it,rather go from start up Old Howick road to Hilton and back down, nice hill there. Frosty Posted October 8, 2014 Share Nice, who did it for you?We ordered two different Italian brands, Giessegi (GSG) and Bicycleline (BL), each sold through local friends (Jhb South and East Rand respectively). pe3nguin
FlyingScot Posted October 8, 2014 Share Very nice kit - is the top green and yellow or black and yellow? It might just be the lighting. Black would look epic! Green would look like the boks Frosty

I would suggest a ride up fox hill but not from the centre of town unless you do this after 2pm .
