I really wish someone would make some doccie or such of the normal people doing the Epic.

Looking at the sharp end of the field can be boringly predictable.  I want to the see the triumphs and tribulations of the normal riders.

Instagram: Friendly congratulations shake between two phenomenal MTB riders. Jaroslav kulhavy and Rudi van Houts after placing first and third respectively in stage one today.

Karl Platt and Urs Huber came in 2nd.

That's my @AbsaCapeEpic done. Most emotional day I've ever had on a bike. To @emillindgren85-it was short, it was sweet, but such an honor

Brendon will be riding as an outcast.

@AbsaCapeEpic have made the decision todo tomorrow's stage as an outcast.

Yip always a debate, but as I said some serious bike issues going forward in this race. All that fine dust will now be mud that will be in cables, etc

Must say riding these elevations and distances in the weather of '06 or '12 is one of the worst days on a bike

I still have Vietnam style flashbacks of that day in 2012...

Couldnt agree more. That is where all the interesting stuff happens. With all the footage they film in a day surely they could do a full hour highlights show rather than the current 30 minutes. I understand there must be extra costs.

It would be nice to have 30 minutes of front of the race pros and 30 minutes of further back in the field.

Tomorrow's stage will seem like deja vu to the riders. The route will go in the same general direction but seem to cut out the second helping of Groenlandberg. There is slightly less climbing, but over a shorter distance too.

Songo came back from 2 technicals to power past the Bulls team and ride a 45 second gap into them as well in the last quarter of stage 1. Did they pull too many amps to open up that gap today? I guess the rest of the week will reveal the answer.

Bulls did what they do best. They stayed out of trouble and went for consistency over high risk. In recent years this strategy has backfired on them somewhat, so lets see how they treat tomorrow's stage.

Merida were their usual spectacular self. Hermida and van Houts will pray for a week free of illness and technicals

Topeak Ergon will tell themselves that there is still a lot of racing left in the week. Their approach will surely be to try and divide and conquer the 3 teams in front of them. They will also need to call a favor or 2 from the likes of the Mitas team.

Ariane and Annika blasted the ladies race out of the water for 2015 with a 21 minute gap on the first stage. It is hard to see them losing from here, but stranger things has happened.

I know they have rules. I clicked on the link to the RULES

https://www.cape-epic.com/downloads/2014AbsaCapeEpicRules.pdf

There's this one, (they dumbed it down after a certain Swiss multiple winner transgressed it once and got into a foofie with a landowner)

13.7 No rider shall trespass at any time of the year on land which is not open to the public for mountain biking and which forms part of the race route of any edition of the race, nor will any rider distribute any GPS co-ordinates in respect of the route at any time.

But for the record, since I'm not a rider I don't think this applies to me. Here is a link to the kmz of this year's route, stage by stage.

stage 1

stage 2

stage 3

stage 4

stage 5

stage 6

stage 7
