I'm writing for my mate Chris who has just has his 2014 Specilized EPIC Marathon stolen off his locked bike rack in a secure parking garage in the Foreshore. Got it all on CCTV, but that does not change the fact that its gone.

It is the 2014 model in black / grey. (Similar to picture)

Size L

Serial # WSBC604047721I

It currently has mis matched brakes as the original is in for repairs. Very obvious the levers are different.

It has a pump clamp on the seat post

Conti tyres otherwise stock Specilized Epic Marathon. (XO drive train, SID fork, SWAT)

Reward offered!!!

No questions asked for safe return.

Please contact Chris on 083 260 2874 or chrish@soarsoft.co.za or me.

It just seems one cannot leave a bike on a rack anymore, even if it's locked. I'm insured with CycleSure and they specifically state that bikes must be locked with an approved lock and cable, otherwise no cover. How one would prove the latter if bikes are stolen I wouldn't know, other than to take a few snaps with your mobile every time you leave your bike locked on a rack in a public place.

What lock was it and how did they break it open/get the bike off the carrier?

I have a padlock on my Thule that locks it onto the towbar and a substantial chain running from that, that goes through the frame. Will need a pretty big pair of bolt cutters to get that off.

The crooks and skelms have a nifty tool these days. It is a cordeless angle grinder, a grinder that works with a battery like a cordless drill. cuts through a cable like a scissors though paper. Minimal noise. Beware boys.Easily concealed in a purse or backpack. No heavy boltcutters needed.

Schocking. Hope he recovers his ride.

I just wonder where these bikes are going.

They are specifically targeting high end bikes.

Criminals wont take the risk of stealing a bike off a locked rack unless there is a lucrative market for that bike.

True that, it is not quiet at all though, you need ear mufflers to prevent hearing damage when you use them and they create a huge spray of bright sparks. I have a cordless and normal one, both forking loud but will cut a quite substantial lock off in a few seconds/under a minute so the noise doesn't last long and maybe even masks their actions. I know when hear a grinder working I assume it's workman doing some kind of repair etc.

But seeing CCTV was caught of the theft, was a grinder used in this case?

I have a bosch one at work. Its very small, and hardly makes any noise. I use it for cutting fibreglass canopies at work. I have cut a lock before with it after losing the keys. Took about 5 seconds with a sharp disc. Absolutely effortless. In Paarl they are using them to cut garage locks and farmgates on the farms.

Perfect for a bike left unattended on a bike rack at big events. I have accepted long ago I cannot leave my bike unattended. Part of life in our fine country.

Hardly any noise? I suppose perceptions of noise are all relative so we gona have to agree to disagree.

More important is the duration of the cutting time which makes it an easy in and out.

Not all locks are a few second cut though, the Discus or big square ones have 12mm bolts/shackles and you need to cut both sides off to get them out of the way unlike a typical padlock. But still a minor hitch considering the lock is supposed to make the item safe as Fort Knox.

Still wondering if the op can confirm the method of removing the lock.
