Find some shade and sleep from about 11h00 to 16h00, then ride through the night when it is cooler. You'll have a 5 hour rest, and 19 hours to ride per day. Include shorter rest stops every 3 hours or so. It stays light until 20h00 and first light is before 05h00 so you only need lights for about 6 hours. Whatever you do, water is going to be a major issue, so fill up whenever you pass a windmill.

Whichever way I look at it, this is NOT FOR ME!

They have water points every 50kms.

I suspect that anyone resting/sleeping for 5 hours a day will not be competative.

Correct, this will be won by a team that will probably sleep for a maximum of 3 hours the entire trip!

My money will be on a pair of top Adventure Racers.

Not trying to be smart or facetious, but how does he justify an extraordinary entry fee of $10k? This is proper forex moolah, not like the Epic where foreigners can cash in on a weak exchange rate. Even local pro teams don’t have that sort of cash lying around to toss at a race entry for two riders. Is he aiming to limit the field to a handful of teams who can either find sponsorship, or can afford it? Why not lower the fee, and make it more accessible to a broader range of people. Or is he intentionally trying to create an elitist holy grail, by making it unaffordable? Did he say anything about the fee at the launch? Something I’m battling to understand here…

that is precisely what I thought - that's the only sport that really prepares you for a lack of sleep AND huge physical exertion over many days.

this sounds like an adventure mtb race...could be fun, if you look at it in a certain way.

the issue is not the first day or two but days 3 and later, when the lack of sleep will really kick in - affecting orientation, balance, navigation and the ability to ride efficiently,

Yup, I think you are right. Like in single handed round the world sailing, the winner is often the one that can handle sleep deprivation the best. Those who can deal with short interrupted sleep, have a great advantage.

and lots or entrants who won't even be podium contenders....just for the chance to brag that they did the event..

the old "how do you know someone did the epic" joke will change to "how do you know someone did the munga"

Do you ride for fame and fortune, or do you ride for reasons only you know? The former go for the Epic, the latter for the Freedom Challenge. To me the Munga sounds like the worst of both, the cacophony of tv cameras of the epic, and the pain and suffering of the freedom challenge. So it better offer a wodge of cash to make it worth-while.

I raced at a small local event on Saturday, and was interested to hear a Freedom Challenge finisher gush over this race.

His view is that more prize money than the Tour de France will attract top pro's and a $100 000 random prize will attract the likes of my friend who has the funds for the entry fee and knows the challenge of an event like this. It sounds like the entries will be snapped up.

I don't unferstand why so many people have taken to already trying to tarnish this race. Silly comments like, why so much, why this and why that. How do you know a guy has done the Epic... he will tell you. What crap man. Again for all the pople who have nothing good to say why not open a thread called "we have nothing good to say about anything and we can't afford some races so we are just going to bash everyone who has ever done anything we can't afford and will never finish."

Alex has probably poured many years into this race and endless hours of work. It is for people who need to do it. This world is full of all sorts. Rather try and muster up some courage and say something positive than come bashing this thread.

dude its not bashing..its reality..fact is that when someone asks the question "will they get enough entries?" - the answer is categorically yes and the reason is 2 fold. firstly, you will get the top adventure racers competing for this (i dont see pro's being able to compete against those guys) and secondly, you will get guys with lots of disposable cash doing it for the honour/bragging right of doing it. Its not bashing the event, its stating the obvious. For all of these reasons I think its going to be an interesting event and I look forward to it

I think that relating the attraction to TdeF prize money is not nessecarily a good benchmark.

The Tour winner splits his prize money with his team mates, but pockets his win bonus and enhanced contact which in Wiggens and Froomes cases have been positioned at over $5m per year.

The team owners don't pay this kind of cash out of philanthropy, but because they can on sell the sponsorship bonanza at significantly more than this.

The munga will enjoy none of that so team owners who "own" the contracts of the top pros will make a commercial descision.

Having said that, I hope the race succeeds. I think the field will be full and a top Adventure racing team will win it.
