Is motorcycling allowed?

I want to get back into motorcycling via the adventure route, but I'm in abit of a quandary. Do I go balls to the walls and buy a BMW or KTM adventure bike or do I start with something like a KLR 650 just to get my skill levels up again.

I am at the same stage and have my eyes on an adventure bike.

I have been warned by by a number of riders that the KTM is hell on wheels and requires serious balls. It is the best bike out there though.

I will prob settle on the BM

I'm no motorbike fundi, but this dilemma is common when purchasing anything really. For me, the question is what you ultimately want, and if you do buy something cheaper/stepping stone, how much are you gonna get back for it when you ultimately want to upgrade (if you ever do).

So say a KLR 650 is R40000 (quick gumtree check) and the 990 Adventure is R100000, are you going to be happy throwing away some cash into your stepping stone?

No one really wants to chuck cash away, but the cost of binning a KTM 990 adventure will cost a hell of a lot more than binning a KLR, even with insurance. and starting out I'm pretty damn sure I drop it quite a few times.

Yup the 990 demands a skilled rider. Looked at the F800GS, stunning bike, but I don't know if I could bring myself to buy one and hurt it while I'm getting my riding skills up again.

Sad to say I've only used her to Mica twice so have about 30km on:-(

Day after I collected her I did a Saddle Sore 2000km so haven't been on a bike seat much after that!!

Starting work on the 12th though. Incredibly light and gets to 100km/h fast enough to clear traffic, has ABS and brakes by Brembo so am happy with the safety issues.

get the KLR... its bullet proof and will do anything the others can do in less comfort... ha ha

KLR is awesome, but could definitely do with some cosmetic updates and new instrument Panel. But i heard Kawazaki ZA are not allowed/not going to import more KLR Motorbikes? Dont know how true that is.

I believe the KLR650 carb motor indeed all carb motors are going to be phased out. Something to do with emissions etc.

But it soooooo fuuuuuuugggggllllyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!

I couldnt agree with you more. The only reason i wont buy it,is because of its 1975  "dashboard"

I hate that speedo and Ref Counter. Surely they could have made all electronic or just nicer,it actually looks very cheap?

With the money you save on fuel and not buying the KTM/BMW do this...
