HELP ME PUT ON WEIGHT

Recommended Posts

It’s not often you hear about someone who battles to put on weight. I have consistently weighed 68 kg for 30 years, +/- 1 kg. I've never had to worry about food or diets or managing weight gain that most people struggle with.

I lead a well above-average active lifestyle; I have Polar records right back to 2005, and average 7.9 hours/week activity for those 9 years. This is made up of high intensity exercise: cycling and surf-skiing. And 20 years of competitive squash before that.

However, in the last 2 years or so, I have steadily started to shrivel away, now down to 64 kg. This loss is all muscle mass because I never had any body fat to lose in the first place…!! My age is now 55, which understandably has something to do with the wasting away – but not everything. My wife says I look haggard and hammered…she’s on my case to eat more and beef up.

I am pretty fussy about what I eat and do keep a subconscious track of carb and protein intake; if anything I don’t eat enough protein. I do know from years of racing that the LCHF diet won’t work for me.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to beef up, how to put on weight, specifically muscle mass. (Please don't say pump iron and eat supplements...)

Me too. Have had all the tests done but to no avail.

I can eat anything and NEVER put on a gram. Only problem - low blood pressure. I will live forever man.

Beer just goes to the belly. No supplements help either.

Feel great but a hammer needs weight

Drink more beer!

Unfortunately you are going to have to "pump iron" and increase your protein intake (whey protein shakes are the easiest) if your are specifically looking at muscle mass.

hahahahahaha

Beat me to it

There is only one way to put on weight,

eat more.

There is only one way to put on muscle mass,

resistance training.

IF you want to put on muscle you will have to up your protein and carb/fat intake so that you consume more calories than you spend.

Also consider how you eat, timing of your meals with muscular weight gain.

Pre, post and intra training nutrition is important in this.

Nothing has to be supplemented if you can get enough food down your throat.

I eat a lot (4 cooked meals a day) and I snack and I use supplements.

I have to supplement or I cannot pick up anything and I only weigh 75kg's.

Your eating times and portion sizes may have something to do with it.

Do you eat meals that replace the calories that you burnt whilst exercising?

Try and establish a schedule of eating and get your carbs to proteins to fats ratio right, eating smaller portions more often helped me out.

An example:

7:30 Breakfast (scrambled eggs with some avo and coffee)

10:30 Snack (fruit and nuts)

13:30 Lunch (chicken/tuna/beef or any protein + veg + avo + coffee)

16:30 Snack ( usually fruit/protein shake)

19:30 Dinner ( grilled chicken/fish/beef/lamb etc etc + veg + a fat)

I am no expert, but it worked so why not give it a try.

I'm in the same boat but it does not bother me, I'm 29 and been weighing 68kg/70kg for 12 years and eat double what my brother eats in a day and he weighs 85kg and battles with weight. I don't mind cause I eat what I want when I want. Drink all the beer and Brandewyn and coke as I please and I'm fit and healthy
