do you have an entry to 2015 s2c? I'm Guessing you are going to answer no here?

Quite right. Last one I did was 2011. I'll be interested to hear from you guys how it worked. My gut feel says that it's going to be annoying to have to check a GPS all the time.

Its been done on Dusi2c (last 2 years) and Joberg2C (last year).  I think it is awesome what they are trying to achieve and support them in their efforts.  It hasn't really effected me that much, but i am a middle of the bunch rider.  if you do a extra few km because you got lost, you just earned your beer that little bit more.  Did a few extra km's on a marked route when one of the front guys took a wrong turn, with the "skaap teorie" we just followed

Does someone not have a Google .kmz or .kml file of a previous Sani event? I want to take down some key waypoint which I can input to a device...(all 3 days if possible)

Even a gpx file will be first prize...

What i want to do is to at least have waypoints of certain features such as waterpoints or Mckenzie Country Club, for example...

Much appreciated

I rode day 1 of Joburg2c last year as well as the Sani2C and used the download we were given to try. I must say I found the system works really well, and from my prospective I loved it - adds another dimension to the whole experience.

I only missed one turn on the Joburd2c but picked it up within 20 meters.

Big advantage is no markers left in the bush.

Organisers will release files closer to the time? Routes not necessarily exactly the same every year, for one we will have a different starting point on day 1 than previous

I did it using gps last year....it worked very well. You find you don't often look at the instrument...just go with the flow. I only looked when it started beeping because it wasn't happy with where I was going.

I've used GPS twice (training + Transbaviaans) and I must say it's not so intrusive.  I think with Sani it will be more go with the flow, but there will be the odd area where you can glance down and see.  Also remember, it's not like you need to make sudden changes at 60kphm.

It's more like you traveling at 23kmph, you look up, at the road, you look down, nothing coming you keep peddling.

I'm pumped, can't wait.

The charging stations are obviously going to be KEY!

Tried following a trail today using the GPS map loaded onto my Edge 500 & happy to report no problems despite being told the 500 is not ideal.

My advise is to follow the trail & rather rely on the garmin to tell you when you have gone "off course". If you follow the map on your garmin you might not make cut off cause that is how slow you will be going.

Please can you provide more detail on what you did, I'll also be using my 500

see the link Shaper supplied, that's pretty much it, I suggest using one of your own previously ridden rides from a trail you are familiar with which has forks & cross roads, just to make it a bit more challenging. What I liked about the Edge 500, if you were on jeep track & just slightly off the line then it will alert you to being "off course" although you are heading in the right direction, on unknown trails this can be good or bad, that's how accurate & fast it is. If you go off course it will tell you how many meters & minutes back you need to go. The display however is limited though as you can't see your HR, I suppose it could possibly be setup, still need to play around with that.

You could ride that course without a gps it's so well demarcated and there are enough people around...the only possible problems are see are when you get close to the coast on day three

stupid question, but why do you need a GPS specifically for Sani2C?  If you are big time into tracking your rides & races, then surely you need a GPS for any race, why only try to rent one for Sani2C?

As someone else commented, this years routes are unmarked.

For me it is more of a question of ' how often will I use the thing when I am not riding stage races ' which is MAYBE once a year, max.

You might be surprised to find a gps unit to be a pretty useful little device that you would be using for more than just finding waypoints on stage races.

A couple of us had a training weekend at Mankele and I loaded some of their trails (gpx files were available on the internet) to see how it would work on the Edge 500 - the routes and terrain is similar to the Sani. For me it works easily enough. I had a clear indication as to where the road/trail were going. I found that I looked at it a lot more initially, but once the novelty wore off I would just check it when junctions came up.

As has been said above I would like to customize the screen to show HR, but it does not seem possible...
