We were talking about it this morning on our ride, if they are doing a 4th event next year. They should dedicate that to corporates and charities.

Saw something very similar on day 3 of Trail. Girls ahead of us were been grabbed as they rode passed -I assumed the kids were going going for back pockets. I yelled at them as we went passed but they hit my partner on her butt (admittedly she does have a nice butt).

 

That whole section felt dodgy - gave me that pre-rape feeling. I was glad there were other bikers around.

 

This is by far the most serious allegation levelled at the Sani. Moans of cold water and poor jerseys pale by comparison. I really hope that this can be resolved before next year.

IN THE PAST EVENTS AT THE END OF DAY 2 they used to take you up that climb right at the end, on the climb the little buggers stood there grabbing stuff out of broken cyclist pockets, they almost got my partners cell instead they got a bike pump to the back of the head i think thats why they diverted the last section along the road and not through the houses up that climb,,,this year for joberg2c they got clever with a rider in front of us and i told my partner we need to catch the guy they going to try nick his stuff, this is not new at that section 

had a few close calls on that section, did not always feel safe towards the end. especially that steep little hill to get into jolivliet.

now that hill where we turned left and took the slip to the left again,,,that climb we swing off now,, previously they sent us up there not to the left by then most the back markers were bleeding already they just sat there picking what they wanted out the guys pockets,, i can only ASSume thats why the rather took us along the road

I sent Farmer Glen an email about the women feeling unsafe on the ride and he replied very quickly as follows:

 

"We are working on footage taken of various groups of obnoxious youth. The affected

communities are outraged with this behaviour of individuals and will help us
identify and discipline the culprits. Fortunately we have had not serious
incidents and are working on a better solution at these hotspots"

 

This is why I love this race so much. Farmer Glen does not just ignore problems and sweep them aside. He deals with them.

I did one way back in 2007. That was when it still was a 'farmers' ride'.

That was about the first year that it became impossible to get an entry if you haven't ridden before .... for a while it was possible to get an entry by doing the Sani2C nonstop - but that probably didn't generate the type of income that the proper event generated, so it was discontinued.

Had the same problem on Dusi2C - slower riders being pick pocketed.

 

They managed to get most of that stuff back as well...

Rusty250, it was the Adventure, day 1 at the little bridge on the district road about 2km from the first water point. He was ahead of me and just saw him flying through the air and land on the rocks in the river bed. Hectic!  Understand he was part of the Emirates Air team, and would also like to know how the poor guy is doing. Slowed down riders and then left, not sure that he would make it. Worst crash I have ever seen.

Was a first Sani for me, 2nd for Nicci, had a jol in the Adventure!

Being quite a bit stronger, I did ALOT of pushing, man that does hurt the legs eventually but still averaged 70% max hr for each day.

B batch start for day1, then back to F for the rest, seemed like we were constantly passing SuperGroup peeps...

Thankfully we had a pretty clear run down the Umko, which was awesome, stopped and took pics, quickly catch up, stop again to swivel the bars with the GoPro on, catch up again, loads of fun.

Shew the floating bridge onto the beach in the wind wobbled a lot! had a few close moments!

Shuttle up to collect the car, got rockstar parking right in front of the box collection, 29er, 650b and luggage all _into_ the boot of the Megane Sport and off to Winterton we went for a couple days before heading home.

Legs weren't interested in riding up Spionkop, so we drove

Update on Nic Bac from Facebook,  holding thumbs for you Nic,

 

Update #3 on Nic: unfortunately it is not very good news. The doctors found some transverse damage to his spinal cord that had not previously been detected in the MRI scans. They say that this cut was not leaking spinal fluid ( we assume that to be a good thing) and they inserted a sleeve to prevent future leakage and promote the closing of the cut. The fusion of his back was however very successful and they are satisfied that his back is now stable. They are not committing to whether he will regain the use of his legs, saying that is up to him and the rehabilitation process which will start almost immediately. Sadly, it appears that spinal shock, which we all had hoped was the initial temporary cause of his loss of feeling and mobility, has now worn off, so his continued lack of mobility is now as a consequence of the spinal cord damage. The 15 rib fractures are all ribs that have torn away from the spine, which they worked on as well last night. 
He can now at least be moved with confidence and we hope to be able to relocate him up to JHB within days (not weeks), where we will continue an aggressive rehabilitation process . We have not lost hope but we are also trying to be objectively pragmatic under the circumstances. Thank you all for the continuous outpouring of love, prayers and well wishes. Nic and the family at large appreciate it emmensely

This worries me as it is something I am concerned about doing the Van Gaalen marathon. I rode it with my boyfriend last year and did not feel safe in some of the more built up areas, along a river where people were doing washing and there are long reeds. I would be riding alone this year and safety is something I am thinking about....

 

Sorry to hear about Nic Bac, very sad and I hope he will fight for recovery.
