So I started day 1 of a new training program this moring (actually day 2 because day 1 was 'stretch' which I interpret to be 'Watch the tennis at Wimbledon') ...

and I keep waking myself up everytime my head hits the desk.

What do people to try and stay alert (awake?) after a morning training session (assuming one is not asthmatic and has sneaky inhaler handy  )

try using melatonin to regulate your sleep - it works for jetlag

I am also a bit of an insomniac, I tried melatonin but it never worked for me. Personally I dont stress about it and I dont take tablets, eventually when I am tired enough I sleep. I think some folk just need less sleep than others, the old 7 hours a night is too much for me, usually I can make do on about 4/5 hours and still function normally.

Melatonin only works if you turn the lights off - so once you have taken it, it only works if it's dark - few people know this - so reading or watching TV and waiting for it to work is not effective.

some people do just really cope better with less sleep, there is no way i can do the 8 hour a day thing, even if i take a horse tranquilizer

I had the same problem when training for Ironman, eventually you just give up and tattoo eyeballs on your eyelids.

Seriously get to bed earlier, you need to get more sleep with a big training load the only way is to get to bed early and try catch up on the weekends with some afternoon naps. Coffee and other stimulants only work for so long, nature balances its books in the end.
