How was the ultra route? is it do-able for someone who normal does marathons (Sabie, Barberton. Monster...)?

That Marathon route this time is a con as far as I am concerned. Does the MTN series no justice.

This was my first ultra .I have done these distances in stage races before but a random ultra takes a lot out of you .The longest ride I have done in the last year was 4h and yesterday took me just under 6 hours .The last 90 minutes  was painful. If you train more than 8h a week I think you will be fine ,but for us that do mostly interval training and max 6hours a week it is doable but not enjoyable

Since when does Spur count as gourmet dining??? That food is more likely to come back out the way its come in... Pretty much the same with the USN stuff.

Its just an observation from someone who has multiple Crater Cruises under their belt that it has lost its soul. Good organisation, enough water points, and yes, bananas and potatoes are enough for basic food. But considering how the race used to be, I know that it could be so much more.

Must say yes, I have no reference on how the Crater use to be as the last one I did was one of the very first ones. So for me as first timer, it was great.

Hehe, Spur is still ok for some of us youngsters that don't earn the big bucks (yet)

Cheers

The only water piont to mention was the second last one.Local kids running most of the show.Lighties putting lube on my chain, young girl washing my sun classes while her mother was filling my bottles with ice and there was coke.Thats how I also remember all my past crater cruises. The new Ultra route is a welcome change which is much more of a mountain bike route.

The Ultra is do-able for someone who does marathons. The entire route was rideable even through the kloof section.I just had to pace myself especially with that heat of yesterday. The new route is more of challenge than the old traditional one.

Lots of people complaining about a a very normal race that will always be a normal race.

If you are a person that wants exclusive treatment then go and pay for it and enjoy it but don't expect to find it at a small race in a small town in the Free State. If you do the basic maths behind one of these races you will find there is not some chap driving an Aston Martin ripping the ring out of it. Rather don't do formal races if you feel like you ripped off.

I see the first guy across the line in the Marathon has been DQ'd and Julius Cobbett has been given the win.

Does anybody know what happened ?

It was me, I mentioned to the racing officials before and after the race that I was gonna ride the 26 km with my GF (it was her first race), but they never adjusted my time/race. As I crossed the finish line I even told them not to scan my SAS board, but they probably didn't notice/care.

I don't really want exclusive treatment Rot, but if one is paying 100's of Randelas to enter, a +220 km round trip, I would just like to be catered for. I don't ask for much: if its an mtb event. I would like most of it off-road. And although I ride self-contained in terms of food & drinks, at the water points, a bit of variety of eats and drinks and personal service to perk one up, that includes just a little bit of cold Coke please.

So where does the entry Rands go? to the pockets of the few Pros who end up on the podium? They don't mean a thing to me. Prize giving is always over by the time I arrive. Or to pay for TV coverage so you can get air time for your sponsors? I don't have DSTV so never get to see the coverage anyway. Seems the rank & file are the last consideration. That's all wrong to me, and I am comparing it to well over a hundred mtb events I have done. It can still be a great event, mainly because of its very special location. Perhaps its time to go independent again (like Barberton did)
